The nanny looked at the kitchen feed.

The father noticed.

"That's where you were?"

She nodded.

"Yes, sir."

The older girl opened the recorded timeline.

She moved backward.

Two minutes.

Three.

Then pressed play.

The screen showed the foyer.

Empty.

The staircase dominated the right side of the image.

The lower hallway appeared on the left.

No audio.

The father watched.

The time stamp showed 12:16 p.m.

Nothing happened for several seconds.

Then the nanny appeared at the far left edge.

She crossed the hallway carrying a laundry basket.

She disappeared toward the kitchen.

The father looked at her.

She nodded.

"That was before lunch."

The footage continued.

Thirty seconds later, the mother appeared at the top of the stairs.

She was holding the four-year-old girl's hand.

The father looked at his wife.

She stared at the floor.

On screen, the older daughter followed them into the hallway.

The three figures were too far from the camera for facial expressions to be clear.

But body language was obvious.

The older daughter gestured.

The mother turned toward her.

The little girl stood between them.

The older daughter pointed toward something off camera.

The mother responded sharply.

The older girl backed away.

Then something unexpected happened.

The mother looked down at the little girl.

She took her hand.

Led her toward the top step.

The father leaned closer to the television.

The mother beside him whispered:

"Richard."

He did not respond.

On screen, she crouched.

She appeared to speak to the child.

Then she looked over the railing.

Toward the lower hallway.

Toward the kitchen.

The father froze.

The mother looked around again.

The older daughter moved toward them.

The mother raised one hand.

A stop gesture.

The girl stopped.

Then the mother positioned the little girl directly beside the first stair.

The father whispered:

"What are you doing?"

His wife stood behind him.

"Richard."

The screen answered before she could.

The mother stepped behind the little girl.

The father stared.

His breathing slowed.

Something in his mind refused to understand what his eyes were seeing.

On screen, the mother's hand moved.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

A small deliberate motion.

The little girl lost balance.

She tipped forward.

The older daughter lunged.

Too far away.

The child began falling down the upper steps.

The mother stepped backward.

The older girl screamed, though the camera had no audio.

At the bottom of the screen, movement exploded from the hallway.

The nanny.

She ran from the kitchen.

She saw the child.

Dropped the plate she was holding.

The plate shattered.

She sprinted.

Then, exactly as she had described, she threw herself forward.

Her knees hit the floor.

She slid across the polished wood.

Her arms extended.

The little girl came down the final steps.

The nanny caught her.

The impact knocked both sideways.

The child never struck the floor.

The nanny curled around her instinctively.

Protecting her.

The father stared.

The older daughter stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

The little girl in his arms sniffled.

The nanny looked down.
