An innocent nanny had nearly been blamed for something terrible.

Nothing about it felt sterile.

That evening, the mother packed a suitcase.

The little girl stood in the hallway.

"Mommy going?"

Her father knelt.

"Mommy's going to stay with Auntie for a little while."

"Why?"

He searched for an answer a four-year-old could carry.

"Because Mommy needs some help."

The little girl thought.

"Like doctor?"

"Kind of."

"Is she sick?"

The father paused.

"She's having a hard time making safe choices."

The child's eyes widened.

"Did I do bad?"

The father pulled her close.

"No."

He said it immediately.

"Absolutely not."

She wrapped her arms around him.

"You didn't do anything wrong."

The nanny stood at the end of the hallway.

Her eyes filled.

The mother came downstairs.

Suitcase.

Coat.

No makeup.

The little girl ran toward her.

The father tensed instinctively.

Then hated himself for it.

The mother knelt.

She hugged her daughter carefully.

"I'm sorry."

The child touched her face.

"You coming back?"

The mother began crying.

"I hope so."

The older daughter remained near the wall.

Her mother looked at her.

"Lily."

The girl crossed her arms.

The mother stood.

"I'm sorry."

The girl said nothing.

The mother took one step toward her.

The girl stepped backward.

The mother stopped.

That was important.

For once, she respected the boundary immediately.

"I understand."

The older girl looked down.

Her mother left.

The door closed.

The house became silent.

The father stood there with his daughters.

The nanny.

The suitcase wheels still echoing in his mind.

He had no idea what tomorrow would look like.

That night, the older daughter could not sleep.

She came into his room around one.

He was sitting on the edge of the bed reading emails from attorneys he did not want to read.

She stood at the doorway.

"Dad?"

"Come in."

She sat beside him.

"Are you divorcing Mom?"

He closed the laptop.

"I don't know."

"Are you mad?"

"Yes."

"At me?"

He turned.

"No."

"Because I showed the video."

He stared at her.

"No."

She looked down.

"If I didn't show it, maybe nobody would've known."

He felt sick.

He turned toward her fully.

"Listen to me."

She looked up.

"You did not break this family by showing what happened."

Her eyes filled.

"The thing that happened created the problem."

He touched her shoulder.

"The camera only showed us the truth."

She nodded.

"Are you mad at Mom?"

"Yes."

"Do you hate her?"

The father thought carefully.

"No."

"How?"

He looked toward the dark doorway.

"People can do something terrible and still be people we love."
