He had forgotten it existed.

His wife apparently had too.

The father looked at his daughter.

"The camera recorded this?"

She nodded.

The mother stepped forward.

"Lily."

The girl's shoulders tensed.

"Stay out of this."

The father looked at his wife.

"Why?"

"Because she's twelve."

"Which means she can operate the television."

The mother turned toward the girl.

"Go upstairs."

The older daughter shook her head.

"No."

The mother's face changed.

The father saw it immediately.

Not anger.

Fear.

His stomach tightened.

"Lily."

The girl looked at him.

"What did you see?"

Her mother snapped:

"Nothing."

The father did not look away from his daughter.

"What did you see?"

The older girl's eyes filled.

"I don't want to say it wrong."

"Then show me."

She turned toward the living room.

The mother moved between her and the television.

"Enough."

The father stared.

"What are you doing?"

His wife faced him.

"Protecting our family."

"From what?"

"From confusion."

The father almost laughed.

"Confusion?"

The nanny remained on her knees.

Nobody had told her she could stand.

The father noticed.

"Please get up."

The nanny rose carefully.

The mother looked furious.

The father continued.

"You don't need to stay on the floor."

The nanny nodded.

"Thank you."

The older daughter walked toward the television.

The mother followed.

"Lily, give me that remote."

"No."

"Give it to me."

"No."

The father stepped between them.

"Stop."

His wife stared.

"You're taking her side now too?"

"There are no sides yet."

The mother laughed bitterly.

"Of course there are."

The father looked at her.

"Then why don't you want me to see the video?"

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then tried again.

"Because security footage can be misleading."

The older girl stared.

The father asked:

"How?"

"Angles."

"What?"

"Angles can make things look different."

The father's skin went cold.

"You haven't seen it."

The mother's expression changed.

He continued.

"You just told me footage can be misleading."

She looked away.

"That's common sense."

The father nodded slowly.

"Turn it on."

The older girl pressed a button.

The television lit up.

A menu appeared.

The mother moved toward the screen.

The father stepped in front of her.

"Don't."

She stopped.

The older girl opened the security application.

Four camera feeds appeared.

Front driveway.

Back patio.

Kitchen.

Foyer.
