The scream came from the staircase.

The father heard it from his home office on the opposite side of the first floor.

It was not the ordinary sound of a child crying because a toy had broken or because someone had said no.

It was the kind of scream that made every thought disappear.

He pushed away from his desk so hard that his chair struck the wall.

Then he ran.

By the time he reached the foyer, his wife was already standing at the bottom of the staircase.

Her face was white.

One hand covered her mouth.

The other pointed toward the floor.

"You monster!"

The father stopped.

His four-year-old daughter was crying.

But she was not lying on the stairs.

She was in the arms of the nanny.

The Black nanny was on her knees near the bottom step, breathing hard, one arm wrapped securely around the little girl's back and the other protecting her head.

The child's small hands clung to the nanny's blouse.

The nanny herself looked terrified.

The mother's voice rose.

"You pushed my baby down the stairs!"

The nanny looked up.

"No!"

Her voice cracked.

"No, ma'am. I caught her."

The father stared from one woman to the other.

"What happened?"

The mother rushed toward him.

"She pushed her."

"No!"

The nanny held the crying child closer.

"I saved her."

The mother pointed.

"Look at her lying!"

The father moved toward his daughter.

"Give her to me."

The nanny immediately shifted her arms so he could take the child.

There was no hesitation.

No attempt to hold on.

The father lifted the little girl carefully.

"Sweetheart."

The child buried her face against his shoulder.

"Are you hurt?"

She cried harder.

The father checked her head.

Arms.

Hands.

Nothing obvious.

No blood.

No visible injury.

Just fear.

The mother grabbed his sleeve.

"Call the police."

The nanny stared at her.

"Please."

The mother snapped around.

"Don't you dare speak."

The nanny's breathing became uneven.

"Sir, I swear I didn't push her."

The father looked at her.

"Tell me what happened."

The mother stepped between them.

"Why are you asking her?"

"Because I need to know."

"You need to call the police."

The father looked at his wife.

"I will call whoever I need to call after I understand what happened."

She stared at him.

"You don't believe me?"

"I didn't say that."

"You saw our daughter on the floor."

"No."

He looked toward the nanny.

"I saw her holding our daughter."

"Because she grabbed her after she pushed her."

The nanny shook her head violently.

"No."

The little girl whimpered against her father's chest.

The nanny pointed toward the polished wood floor near the staircase.

"I was in the kitchen."

Her voice trembled.

"I heard her scream."

The mother laughed sharply.

"Of course that's your story."

The nanny continued.

"I ran."

"Stop lying."

"I saw her coming down."

The father frowned.

"Coming down how?"

The nanny looked at the child.

"Falling."

The mother's voice cut through the foyer.

"You pushed her!"

The nanny closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

"I slid across the floor."

The mother stared.

"What?"

"I ran from the kitchen."

The nanny pointed toward the hall.
