The manager nodded.
“Employee schedules.”
“Yes.”
“Customer statements.”
“Yes.”
“Text messages.”
The manager froze.
The owner noticed.
“Whose text messages?”
The manager hesitated.
Then pulled out her phone.
Opened a group chat.
Regional managers.
Sales directors.
Loss prevention.
The owner scrolled.
Messages.
Most ordinary.
Inventory.
VIP visits.
Staffing.
Then:
Watch group entering north entrance. Young, likely browsing only.
Another:
Client complained about two Black women lingering near handbags. LP please circulate.
Another:
Do not escalate race language. Code as client concern.
The owner stopped.
Read again.
Do not escalate race language.
Sender:
Regional compliance director.
Not vice president.
Wider.
The owner handed the phone back.
“Email this entire export to Legal.”
The manager nodded.
The owner looked toward the glass wall separating the office from the sales floor.
The blonde woman stood beside the officer.
Arms crossed.
Still angry.
Still believing this was mostly about her embarrassment.
She had no idea what she had exposed.
The owner walked back onto the sales floor.
Everyone looked toward her.
The officer straightened.
The blonde woman spoke immediately.
“Are we done?”
The owner looked at the officer.
He said:
“I have her information.”
Then to the blonde woman:
“You may leave.”
The blonde woman exhaled dramatically.
“Finally.”
She picked up her handbag.
The owner said:
“One moment.”
The blonde woman stopped.
The officer looked toward the owner.
The owner walked closer.
“You are free to leave.”
The blonde woman stared.
“Then why—”
“I want you to hear one thing.”
The blonde woman’s expression hardened.
The owner continued.
“You didn't mistake me for someone stealing.”
“You never saw me steal.”
“You decided I looked wrong in a place you associate with people like yourself.”
The blonde woman shook her head.
“That’s your interpretation.”
“Yes.”
“It is.”
The owner nodded.
“But your own words will speak for themselves.”
The blonde woman looked toward the phones.
Then back.
“I hope you don't think being the owner gives you the right to humiliate me.”
The irony was so complete that several people visibly reacted.
The owner smiled.
Very slightly.
“No.”
“It gives me the responsibility to make sure nobody else gets humiliated here the way you tried to humiliate me.”
The blonde woman left.
Fast.
The glass doors closed behind her.
