The police officer reached toward the clothes in the Black woman’s hand.
“Put those down.”
She looked at his hand.
Then at his face.
Around them, the luxury boutique had fallen almost completely silent.
A minute earlier, soft instrumental music had floated through the room while sales associates folded cashmere sweaters and wealthy customers moved casually between illuminated displays.
Now nobody moved.
The Black woman stood beside a glass handbag case wearing a fitted lime-green and white patterned halter dress, matching heels, gold bracelets, and small hoop earrings.
Her deep brown skin caught the warm boutique lighting.
Her long, straight dark hair fell neatly past her shoulders.
One hand held two dresses on padded hangers.
The other held the handle of a green designer handbag.
Across from her stood a white police officer with one hand extended.
Beside him, a blonde woman in a pale-pink designer blazer pointed toward the Black woman with a manicured finger.
“That bag too.”
The Black woman turned her eyes toward her.
The blonde woman lifted her chin.
“Put everything down until he checks it.”
The officer glanced between them.
“Ma’am, just set the merchandise on the counter.”
The Black woman remained still.
“What am I being accused of?”
The blonde woman answered before the officer could.
“Stop pretending you don't know.”
The Black woman’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“I wasn't speaking to you.”
Several shoppers reacted.
Not loudly.
A breath.
A shift.
A woman near the shoe display raised her phone a little higher.
The blonde woman noticed.
Her face reddened.
She turned toward the officer.
“This is exactly what she's been doing.”
“What?”
the officer asked.
“Being aggressive.”
The Black woman almost smiled.
Almost.
Instead she looked at the officer.
“You've been here less than a minute.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Did you speak to store management before approaching me?”
The officer paused.
“No.”
“Did an employee report theft?”
“No.”
“Did store security report theft?”
“Not that I'm aware of.”
The Black woman nodded.
“Then verify the complaint before you touch anything I’m carrying.”
The blonde woman laughed sharply.
“Oh, please.”
The officer frowned.
“Ma’am, nobody said you're under arrest.”
“Then I’m free to keep holding the clothes?”
“I’m trying to sort out what happened.”
“Good.”
She lowered the hangers gently onto the glass counter.
“Sort it out.”
The blonde woman stepped forward.
“She’s been wandering around expensive merchandise for twenty minutes.”
The Black woman turned slowly.
“So have you.”
The blonde woman blinked.
“That is not the same thing.”
“No?”
“You know exactly what I mean.”
The Black woman studied her.
Yes.
She probably did.
That was the problem.
The officer lifted one hand.
“Everybody calm down.”
The Black woman looked at him.
“I am calm.”
She was.
That seemed to irritate the blonde woman even more.
The woman pointed toward the green handbag in the Black woman’s hand.
“Check that.”
The officer said:
“Ma’am, was anything stolen?”
“I saw her handling merchandise.”
The Black woman stared.
“This is a store.”
A young sales associate near the register lowered her head to hide a smile.
The blonde woman caught it.
