Nobody clapped.

The owner was grateful.

She looked around.

“Customers, please continue shopping.”

Nobody did.

She sighed.

“Seriously.”

A woman near the handbag wall slowly lowered her phone.

Another customer whispered:

“I'm sorry that happened.”

The owner nodded.

“Thank you.”

Then she looked toward the young Black associate.

“Can we speak?”

The employee looked frightened.

The owner softened her voice.

“You're not in trouble.”

That sentence almost made things worse.

The employee’s eyes filled.

The owner noticed.

“Come with me.”

They entered the office.

The employee sat.

The owner remained standing for a moment.

Then sat too.

Same level.

“What did you think was going to happen?”

The employee looked confused.

“Today?”

“When that customer called police.”

The employee stared at her hands.

“I thought they’d make you leave.”

“Why?”

“Because that's happened.”

The owner went still.

“To whom?”

“A customer.”

“When?”

“February.”

“Tell me.”

The employee swallowed.

“A Black woman came in after work.”

“She was wearing scrubs.”

“Medical?”

“Yes.”

“She wanted a handbag.”

“Which one?”

The employee named it.

Seven-thousand-dollar bag.

The owner nodded.

“What happened?”

“A client said the woman kept touching bags.”

“Security started following her.”

“She got upset.”

“She asked why.”

“One of the managers told her she was making other customers uncomfortable.”

“Which manager?”

The employee told her.

Not flagship manager.

Assistant manager.

The owner wrote it down.

“Then?”

“She tried to leave.”

“Security asked to check her shopping tote.”

“Did they have reason?”

“No.”

“She refused.”

“Police were already outside nearby.”

“They asked them to come in.”

The owner stared.

“What happened?”

“She left.”

“Was she detained?”

“For maybe ten minutes.”

“Complaint?”

“She filed one.”

“What happened?”

“I don't know.”

The employee wiped beneath one eye.

“I got called into the office because I told her I was sorry.”

The owner’s stomach tightened.

“You were disciplined for apologizing?”

“Not officially.”

“What happened?”

“They said I made the company look liable.”

The owner looked away for a moment.

Then back.
