“You think this is funny?”

The employee’s face immediately changed.

“No, ma’am.”

The blonde woman pointed toward her.

“You should have stopped this before I had to call someone.”

The employee looked nervous.

The Black woman noticed.

That was the first thing that mattered more than the accusation.

Not the police.

Not the blonde woman.

The employee.

Fear.

Not ordinary awkwardness.

Recognition.

The Black woman looked toward the employee more carefully.

Early twenties.

Black.

Hair in a neat low bun.

Boutique uniform.

Small gold nameplate.

Her hands were clasped tightly at her waist.

The woman at the center of the confrontation knew that posture.

Someone trying not to become part of the problem.

She looked toward another employee.

Asian American woman.

Late twenties.

Same tension.

Then toward a white male associate near the fitting rooms.

He was staring at the floor.

Interesting.

The blonde woman continued talking.

“I have shopped here for seven years.”

The officer nodded politely.

She pointed toward the Black woman.

“I know what normal customers look like.”

The boutique became completely silent.

The officer’s expression changed.

Not enough.

The Black woman saw it.

So did everyone else.

The blonde woman seemed not to hear herself.

She continued.

“She came in carrying that huge bag.”

The Black woman looked down at her handbag.

It was expensive.

Very expensive.

Limited collection.

Not yet publicly released.

Only twenty-three had been manufactured for early clients.

The blonde woman did not recognize it.

That interested the Black woman too.

“She touched six dresses and three bags without buying anything.”

The Black woman asked:

“You counted?”

“I noticed.”

“You've been following me?”

“I have been watching.”

“That sounds less flattering.”

Several shoppers looked away to hide expressions.

The officer cleared his throat.

“Okay.”

He looked toward the sales associates.

“Who’s the manager?”

Nobody answered immediately.

The young Black employee finally said:

“She’s in the back office.”

“Get her.”

The employee hesitated.

The Black woman saw it.

Again.

Fear.

The blonde woman snapped:

“What are you waiting for?”

The employee moved toward the rear hallway.

The Black woman watched her disappear.

Then the officer looked toward the green handbag again.

“Is that yours?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have a receipt?”

The Black woman stared.

“For my handbag?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Can you prove it's yours?”

The blonde woman smiled.

There it was.

The moment she had been waiting for.

The Black woman turned her head toward the officer.
