"Who placed a four-star United States Army General in handcuffs?"
The sergeant's face drained of color.
The younger officer looked down.
The crowd erupted in whispers.
The woman near the bus stop covered her mouth.
The sergeant stared at the man he had mocked.
The medals.
The stars.
The gold belt.
The controlled posture.
All the details he had decided were fake were suddenly impossible to ignore.
The aide lowered his salute.
"General, your security detail has been trying to reach you for twenty minutes."
The General remained calm.
"My phone is in the vehicle."
The aide looked at the sedan.
Then back at the police.
"Remove the restraints."
The sergeant immediately reached for the key.
The General turned his head.
"No."
The sergeant froze.
The aide looked confused.
The General continued.
"The younger officer will remove them."
The younger officer stepped forward.
His hands were shaking slightly.
He unlocked the cuffs carefully.
The metal opened.
The General brought his hands forward.
Red marks circled both wrists.
The aide noticed them.
So did everyone else.
The sergeant began speaking.
"Sir, I can explain."
The General rubbed one wrist.
He looked at him.
"No."
The sergeant stopped.
The General's voice remained quiet.
"You can explain to your own command."
As if summoned by the sentence, another police vehicle arrived.
Then another.
A black SUV marked with the city police department's executive insignia stopped behind them.
A Police Commander stepped out.
He was a Black man in his late fifties with silver at his temples and a face that immediately showed he already understood the seriousness of the situation.
He walked toward the scene.
The sergeant straightened.
"Commander."
The Commander ignored him.
He went directly to the General.
"Sir, I just received the call. Are you all right?"
The General nodded.
"I am."
The Commander looked at the red marks on his wrists.
His expression tightened.
"What happened?"
The General glanced toward the younger officer.
"His camera recorded most of it."
The Commander looked toward him.
"Officer, preserve the footage immediately."
"Yes, Commander."
The sergeant stepped forward.
"Commander, the subject was noncompliant."
The Commander turned very slowly.
"The subject?"
The sergeant hesitated.
"I mean."
The Commander held up a hand.
"Stop."
The street became quiet again.
The Commander looked at the sergeant's body camera.
"Why is your camera off?"
The sergeant touched it.
"Battery issue."
The younger officer looked toward him.
The Commander noticed.
"Officer?"
