The sergeant pointed toward the uniform.
"That."
The driver's expression barely changed.
"My uniform."
"I can see it's a uniform."
The sergeant gave a short laugh.
"I'm asking what you're pretending to be."
The driver stared at him.
The city noise seemed to fade for a second.
A bus passed behind the patrol car.
Someone honked farther down the road.
The Black driver rested both hands back on the steering wheel.
"I am not pretending to be anything."
The sergeant leaned down until his face was closer to the window.
"Then tell me what all the decorations are supposed to mean."
The driver's jaw tightened slightly.
"You have my license and registration. If you tell me why I was stopped, perhaps we can finish this professionally."
The sergeant straightened.
His face changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
The polite disagreement had become, in his mind, a challenge.
"I decide when this finishes."
The Black driver said nothing.
The sergeant looked toward the patrol car.
Then back at him.
"You know your left taillight isn't working?"
The driver glanced into the side mirror.
"It was inspected yesterday."
"I'm telling you it's out."
"Understood."
The sergeant frowned.
The driver had not argued.
That seemed to disappoint him.
"Step out of the vehicle."
The Black driver slowly turned his head.
"For a taillight?"
"I didn't ask you to debate it."
The driver's voice remained controlled.
"Am I being detained?"
The sergeant's hand moved toward his belt.
"Step out."
The Black driver looked forward for another second.
Then he removed his seat belt.
He opened the door slowly.
The sergeant stepped backward.
The driver rose from the sedan.
He was taller than the officer expected.
Much taller.
He stood just over six feet three and had the broad shoulders of a man who had spent decades maintaining physical discipline.
The polished uniform made him appear even more imposing.
The sergeant looked him up and down.
For the first time, a small amount of uncertainty crossed his face.
It disappeared immediately.
"Hands where I can see them."
The Black driver lifted both hands slightly.
"They are visible."
"Face the car."
The driver didn't move.
"Sergeant, I have complied with every instruction you've given me. I would like you to explain why you are escalating a equipment stop."
The sergeant stepped closer.
"Face the car."
The Black driver turned toward the sedan.
A second patrol car pulled in behind the first.
A younger officer stepped out.
He was white, perhaps twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old.
He looked toward the Black driver.
Then toward the sergeant.
His eyes immediately settled on the uniform.
The younger officer slowed.
"Sergeant?"
The sergeant looked back.
"What?"
The younger officer hesitated.
"Do you need assistance?"
The sergeant pointed toward the sidewalk.
"Watch the passenger side."
There was no passenger.
The younger officer knew that.
