"Back up!"

The Black driver straightened slowly.

His breathing remained controlled.

The sergeant pointed at him.

"You're going in the car."

The Black driver looked toward the younger officer.

"Did your camera capture that?"

The younger officer hesitated.

"Yes, sir."

The word came out automatically.

Sir.

The sergeant noticed.

His face reddened.

"Don't call him sir."

The younger officer looked embarrassed.

The Black driver said nothing.

The sergeant opened the rear door of the patrol car.

"Get in."

The Black driver did not move.

The sergeant grabbed him again.

Then something sounded from the younger officer's radio.

"Unit 214, confirm subject name."

The younger officer reached toward his shoulder microphone.

He read the name from the driver's license.

Dispatch went silent.

A few seconds passed.

Then the voice returned.

"Repeat surname."

The younger officer repeated it.

Another pause.

Longer this time.

The sergeant looked impatient.

"What is taking so long?"

The dispatcher replied.

"Stand by."

The younger officer and Black driver exchanged a look.

The sergeant slammed the patrol car door shut without putting the driver inside.

"What's wrong with dispatch today?"

No one answered.

Then the radio crackled again.

"Unit 214, supervisor requested."

The sergeant frowned.

"I'm the supervisor on scene."

"Additional command supervisor requested. Hold current position."

The younger officer's eyebrows lifted.

The sergeant grabbed his microphone.

"Dispatch, what's the reason?"

"Hold position."

The answer was different this time.

More formal.

The sergeant looked toward the Black driver.

"You call somebody?"

The driver stared at him.

"My hands have been cuffed behind my back."

The crowd laughed quietly.

The sergeant looked furious.

"Everybody back up!"

The woman recording lowered her phone slightly.

"He's literally handcuffed."

The younger officer turned away to hide his expression.

The sergeant walked toward his cruiser.

He opened the driver's door and leaned inside.

The Black driver remained beside the sedan.

For the first time since the encounter began, the younger officer spoke directly to him without the sergeant standing beside them.

"Sir."

The Black driver looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

The Black driver studied his face.

"For what?"

The younger officer swallowed.

"For not stopping this sooner."

The Black driver's expression softened slightly.

"You still have time to decide what kind of officer you are."

The younger officer looked toward the sergeant.

"He outranks me."

"Rank explains authority."

The Black driver looked down at the handcuffs.

"It does not erase responsibility."

The younger officer absorbed that.
