“Sir, don’t.”

The Senior Officer looked at him.

Then at the toy.

“Put it down.”

The Police Officer laughed.

“Relax.”

“Put it down.”

“You’re tense.”

“No.”

“You are.”

He squeezed the trigger.

Water struck her left shoulder.

The street became silent.

That was the moment everything changed.

Not legally.

Not operationally.

Emotionally.

The officer had stopped pretending the encounter was about verification.

He had turned it into humiliation.

The Black Senior Officer looked down.

Water darkened the fabric.

She wiped it.

Then looked back at him.

“Put the toy down before you embarrass yourself any further.”

The officer stepped closer.

“You don't scare me.”

“I’m not trying to.”

“Those stars don’t mean anything out here.”

The Senior Officer looked toward the restricted zone.

“Are you sure?”

He sprayed again.

This time the water hit lower on her sleeve.

The partner moved forward.

“Enough.”

The first officer turned.

“What?”

“I said enough.”

The partner looked nervous but held his ground.

“This is stupid.”

The first officer laughed.

“So now you're taking her side?”

“I'm saying put the toy down.”

The Senior Officer watched.

Interesting.

The partner had finally found his boundary.

Late.

But he found one.

The first officer pointed the toy toward him.

“You want some too?”

“Come on.”

“Relax.”

The partner backed away.

Not frightened of the water.

Frightened of the man holding it.

The Black Senior Officer said:

“Your partner is giving you good advice.”

The first officer turned back toward her.

“I don’t need advice from you.”

“Clearly.”

His face tightened.

He pumped the toy again.

That was when the personnel behind the police tape changed posture.

Not dramatically.

One by one.

Feet adjusted.

Shoulders squared.

Conversation stopped.

The Senior Officer saw it.

The Police Officer did not.

A black command SUV turned onto the street.

Slow.

Controlled.

No siren.

No lights.

The Police Officer glanced over his shoulder.

“Who’s that?”

His partner looked.

His face changed.

The SUV stopped beyond the tape.

Rear door opened.

A Senior Aide stepped out.

Dark uniform.

Briefing folder in hand.

The personnel near the government vehicles snapped to attention.

All of them.

Simultaneously.

The Police Officer lowered the water blaster slightly.

“What the hell?”

The Senior Officer remained still.

The Senior Aide walked toward the checkpoint.

He did not rush.

Did not look at the Police Officer.

He walked directly to the Black woman.
