Her uniform was immaculate.

Senior insignia.

No visible hesitation.

Gray threaded through her pulled-back hair.

She stood nearly six feet tall.

The Police Officer looked at the stars on her shoulders.

Then back at her.

“You got ID?”

“Yes.”

She reached slowly.

He immediately raised one hand.

“Don’t reach.”

She stopped.

“You asked for identification.”

“I said I want to see it, not watch you dig around.”

Her expression remained neutral.

The Police Officer looked toward his partner, who stood several feet away near the patrol car.

The partner looked uncomfortable already.

The Black Senior Officer asked:

“How would you like me to retrieve it?”

The officer pointed.

“Two fingers.”

She complied.

Removed a credential wallet.

Held it out.

He took it.

Opened it.

His face changed for half a second.

Then changed back.

He looked at the insignia.

The name.

The photograph.

The authority line.

Then closed the wallet.

“This proves who you say you are?”

“Yes.”

“Could be fake.”

She stared.

The officer handed it to his partner.

“Run it.”

The partner looked at the credential.

Then at the Black woman.

“Sir…”

“Run it.”

The partner walked toward the patrol vehicle.

The Senior Officer remained where she was.

The first officer folded his arms.

“So what exactly are you doing here?”

She looked toward the restricted property.

“Reporting.”

“For what?”

She did not answer immediately.

The officer stepped closer.

“That’s not classified.”

“I didn’t say it was.”

“Then answer.”

“I am not required to brief local traffic control on operational details.”

The officer’s eyebrows rose.

“Traffic control?”

She looked toward the yellow tape.

“That is your assignment.”

He stared.

“How do you know my assignment?”

“Because I read the coordination plan.”

That should have ended it.

Instead, it made him angrier.

He pointed toward the uniform.

“You think those stars let you talk down to me?”

“I haven’t talked down to you.”

“You called me traffic control.”

“That’s the function your department was assigned.”

“See?”

He laughed without humor.

“That attitude.”

The Senior Officer took a slow breath.

She had spent nearly three decades learning when an argument had stopped being about facts.

This one was close.

The partner returned.

His face was pale.

He handed the credential back to the first officer.

“It checks.”

The first officer stared at him.

“What?”

“It checks.”

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

The Black Senior Officer extended her hand.

“My identification.”

The officer did not return it immediately.

“Who did you call?”

“Dispatch.”

“Only dispatch?”

“And the liaison number listed in the brief.”

The first officer’s jaw tightened.
