He laughed.
Loudly.
“Sure.”
The Senior Officer’s expression changed.
Only a fraction.
The officer saw it as weakness.
It was restraint.
He pointed toward the sidewalk.
“Go stand over there.”
“No.”
That answer landed harder than all the others.
The officer took one step closer.
“You want to get detained?”
“For what?”
“Interfering.”
“With what?”
“My investigation.”
“What are you investigating?”
The officer stared.
The Black woman continued.
“You checked my identification.”
“You verified my credentials.”
“You confirmed I am expected at the restricted site.”
“What criminal or safety concern remains?”
The partner looked toward the ground.
The officer said:
“You’re refusing a lawful command.”
The Senior Officer replied:
“A command is not automatically lawful because you say it louder.”
A neighbor whispered:
“Damn.”
The Police Officer heard.
His neck reddened.
He turned toward the neighbor.
“Go inside.”
The neighbor raised both hands.
The Black Senior Officer looked at the officer.
“You are losing control of yourself.”
That was the worst possible sentence.
Not because she intended it to humiliate him.
Because he knew she was right.
He stepped even closer.
“What did you say?”
“You heard me.”
“Say it again.”
“No.”
“You scared?”
“No.”
His hand moved toward his belt.
The partner immediately said:
“Sir.”
The officer ignored him.
The Senior Officer watched the hand.
She did not move toward her own equipment.
Did not change stance.
Did not raise her voice.
The partner stepped closer.
“Sir, credential is confirmed.”
The first officer turned.
“Back off.”
“I'm just saying—”
“I said back off.”
The partner obeyed.
Again.
The Senior Officer saw the pattern.
Then a strange sound came from the nearby sidewalk.
Children laughing.
A community event had been scheduled in another section of the neighborhood before the exercise changed access plans.
A folding table had been left near a driveway.
Plastic cups.
Bottled water.
Bright toys for children.
Including several oversized water blasters.
Blue.
Orange.
White.
The Police Officer looked toward the table.
Then back at the Senior Officer.
Something reckless appeared in his face.
He walked over.
Picked one up.
The partner frowned.
“What are you doing?”
The officer pumped it once.
Water sloshed inside.
He returned.
The Senior Officer stared at the toy.
The officer smiled.
“Maybe we need to lighten the mood.”
Nobody laughed.
He raised the bright blue-and-orange water blaster.
Pointed it at her.
The partner said:
