“That sounded rehearsed.”

“It was.”

He smiled.

The new board changed culture slowly.

Not perfectly.

People still fought about lawns.

Parking.

Paint colors.

Garbage cans.

Human beings remained human.

But meetings became less theatrical.

Records easier to access.

Power less personalized.

One new president began every meeting with:

“I am a volunteer with limited authority.”

Residents laughed.

Then appreciated it.

The homeowner did too.

Two years after the arrest, a young family bought the house next door.

Their first week, the mother knocked on his door.

“Sorry.”

“Yes?”

“Do packages get stolen around here?”

He paused.

She immediately looked concerned.

“That was a weird reaction.”

He smiled.

“We had a problem once.”

“Oh.”

“Cameras help.”

“Neighbors help more.”

She nodded.

Then laughed.

“Anything else I should know?”

He thought.

“Don't leave your trash cans out after Thursday.”

“HOA?”

“Yes.”

She sighed.

“Of course.”

He smiled.

“Some things survive every scandal.”

She laughed.

Ordinary neighbor conversation.

He liked it.

Later that year, Detective Martinez stopped at the house.

Not official.

She was in the neighborhood visiting family.

He made coffee.

She stood beside the front window.

“Still recording?”

“Yes.”

“Everything?”

“Exterior only.”

“Good.”

He handed her a cup.

She looked outside.

“Do you ever think about that day?”

“The driveway?”

“Yes.”

“Sometimes.”

“You looked very calm.”

“I was not.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Your phone footage shakes during the last twenty seconds.”

He looked surprised.

“I never noticed.”

“You were scared.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

“Good?”

“Fear would have been the rational response.”

He smiled.

“Very comforting.”

Martinez sipped coffee.

“You know what bothered me most?”

“What?”

“She thought grabbing the box gave her control.”

The homeowner looked through the window.
