“What is in my family history?”

Esther said:

“Something that was never supposed to become relevant.”

Alejandro laughed in disbelief.

“That is not an answer.”

His father sat in the chair near the window.

Suddenly, Gabriel looked older.

Not seventy-one.

Older than that.

Alejandro saw fear in him too.

“What condition?”

Gabriel whispered:

“A chromosomal translocation.”

Alejandro frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Valeria answered.

“A piece of one chromosome is attached where it shouldn’t be.”

Alejandro looked at her.

“You have it?”

“No.”

He understood before she finished.

“I do.”

Valeria began crying.

“We think so.”

“You think?”

Esther finally spoke.

“You carry a balanced translocation.”

Alejandro stared at his mother.

“How do you know that?”

Nobody answered.

Alejandro’s heartbeat grew louder.

He looked at his father.

“Did I have testing?”

Gabriel whispered:

“When you were an infant.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

His mother stepped closer.

“It caused no illness in you.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“You were healthy.”

“Why was I tested?”

Silence.

Alejandro looked between his parents.

“Why was I genetically tested as a baby?”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Esther said:

“Because there were circumstances surrounding your birth.”

Alejandro almost shouted.

“What circumstances?”

Valeria touched his arm.

He turned.

She looked pale.

Her free hand was still pressed against her abdomen.

Concern replaced anger for one second.

“Sit down.”

“I’m fine.”

“No.”

She looked directly at him.

“You’re not.”

Alejandro sat beside her.

Not because he wanted to.

Because she was right.

Valeria slowly opened her robe.

Alejandro’s eyes dropped.

A sterile dressing stretched across part of her lower abdomen.

Not huge.

But larger than the tiny adhesive strip used for routine blood work.

He stopped breathing.

“What did they do?”

Valeria’s voice shook.

“An ultrasound-guided fetal blood test.”

Alejandro stared.

“You let somebody put a needle near our baby?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was terrified.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because your mother said if the preliminary result was wrong, telling you would destroy your family for nothing.”

Alejandro looked at Esther.

“You said that?”

She remained composed.

“Yes.”

His anger returned instantly.

“You convinced my pregnant wife to undergo an invasive procedure without telling me?”

“She is an adult.”

“Don’t hide behind that.”

Alejandro stood.

“You knew she was afraid.”

“I knew she had already lost two pregnancies.”

Valeria flinched.

Esther continued.

“I was trying to prevent a third tragedy.”

“By hiding it from me?”

Esther’s voice sharpened.

“By finding the truth before panic destroyed everyone.”

Alejandro stared.

“You always say that.”

His mother frowned.

“What?”

“That truth should wait until you decide people are ready for it.”

Esther’s expression changed.

Alejandro noticed.

The sentence had struck somewhere unexpected.

He looked at Gabriel.

His father still could not meet his eyes.

The sensation returned.

The understanding that the medical test was not the whole secret.

“What did the test show?”

Valeria started crying.

“The baby is okay.”

Alejandro turned toward her.

“Okay?”
