His mother mentioning medical matters before anyone else.

His father refusing to meet his eyes.

The affair he had feared suddenly became the least frightening possibility.

“What happened to our baby?”

Valeria shook her head rapidly.

“The baby is alive.”

Alejandro felt his knees almost weaken.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why would you say alive instead of fine?”

She looked toward Esther.

That glance again.

Fear.

Not of Alejandro.

Of his mother.

Alejandro turned slowly.

“Mother.”

Esther stood completely still.

“Did you do something?”

Her face hardened.

“Be careful.”

“With what?”

“Your accusations.”

Alejandro stepped toward her.

“Then answer me.”

Gabriel finally spoke.

“Alejandro, perhaps your mother should explain.”

Esther looked at him.

Not anger.

Betrayal.

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

Alejandro felt the entire room shift.

“You knew too.”

His father said nothing.

Alejandro laughed bitterly.

“This is unbelievable.”

He looked at Valeria.

“What did they do?”

Valeria whispered:

“They didn’t hurt the baby.”

“Then what?”

Esther stepped forward.

“I was protecting the child.”

Alejandro stared.

“From what?”

His mother looked toward Valeria.

She said nothing.

Alejandro turned back to his wife.

“Please.”

His voice changed.

Anger gave way to fear.

“Whatever this is, I need to know.”

Valeria slowly sat again.

Her hands trembled.

“There were complications after the last miscarriage.”

Alejandro’s face tightened.

He remembered.

Two years earlier.

Valeria had been eleven weeks pregnant.

They had already chosen possible names.

Then came the bleeding.

The hospital.

The silence on the ultrasound.

Alejandro still remembered the doctor removing his gloves before speaking.

He remembered Valeria screaming inside the car after they left.

A second pregnancy ended the following year.

Different circumstances.

Same emptiness.

This pregnancy felt like a miracle they did not trust enough to celebrate loudly.

Alejandro looked at his wife.

“What complications?”

“Not mine.”

She touched her stomach.

“Genetic.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?”

Valeria looked toward Esther.

“Your mother came to see me three months ago.”

Alejandro turned.

Esther did not deny it.

Valeria continued.

“She asked me whether my obstetrician had recommended advanced genetic testing.”

“He did.”

Alejandro remembered.

They had completed routine screening.

Everything appeared normal.

Valeria nodded.

“I told her that.”

“And?”

“She said routine screening wasn’t enough.”

Alejandro looked at his mother.

“How would you know?”

Esther remained silent.

Valeria continued.

“She gave me the name of a specialist.”

“The man in the photograph.”

“Yes.”

Alejandro looked at the image again.

“What kind of specialist?”

“Genetic medicine.”

The words moved slowly through him.

“Why?”

Valeria started crying harder.

“Because there is something in your family’s medical history.”

Alejandro stared.

“What?”

She looked at Esther.

Esther’s jaw tightened.

Alejandro followed her gaze.

“What?”

Nobody answered.

He moved closer to his mother.
