Valeria shook her head.

“The doctor did.”

That mattered.

“Alejandro, I wanted to wait until the baby was stable.”

“How long?”

“Forty-eight hours.”

He frowned.

“You only learned about Rafael last week.”

“Yes.”

“But the fetal procedure was when?”

“Yesterday morning.”

Alejandro looked at the bandage again.

“So the doctor came tonight to check you.”

“Yes.”

“And the photograph was from one of his earlier visits.”

“Yes.”

Alejandro closed his eyes.

Four mysterious visits.

No affair.

No secret lover.

A doctor carrying thirty-nine years of family truth inside a leather bag.

He looked at her.

“I accused you.”

Valeria shook her head.

“You asked.”

“I thought it.”

“I knew what it looked like.”

“You shouldn't have had to carry it alone.”

She started crying.

“That was the part I hated.”

Alejandro moved closer.

She let him.

“I was so afraid you'd look at Gabriel differently.”

“I do.”

She closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

He touched her face.

“But differently doesn’t automatically mean less.”

Valeria looked at him.

Alejandro glanced toward his father.

Gabriel was crying silently.

Alejandro looked back at his wife.

“And I wish you had trusted me enough to let me decide that.”

“I know.”

This time, the phrase did not anger him.

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

Then he carefully placed his hand over her stomach.

Their baby moved.

A small kick.

Alejandro froze.

Valeria gave a broken laugh.

“Apparently someone has opinions.”

Alejandro laughed too.

For one second.

One impossible second inside the worst night of his life, everything narrowed to that movement beneath his palm.

His child.

Alive.

His child had inherited a chromosome from a dead man Alejandro had never known as his father.

But inheritance was not destiny.

He looked toward Gabriel.

That lesson was standing twenty feet away.

Blood was real.

So was choice.

The next morning, nobody left the mansion.

Alejandro slept perhaps forty minutes.

Valeria slept beside him while he remained awake staring at the ceiling.

His parents stayed in the guest wing.

At seven, Alejandro went downstairs.

Gabriel was already in the kitchen.

Of course he was.

He had always been an early riser.

That detail felt strangely painful now.

Gabriel poured coffee.

Then stopped.

“I don’t know whether I’m allowed to make yours.”

Alejandro looked at him.

The question almost broke him.

“You’ve been making it wrong for thirty years.”

Gabriel laughed unexpectedly.

Then cried.

Alejandro sat.

“Black.”

“I know.”

“You always add milk.”

“Your mother says it protects the stomach.”

Alejandro stared.

“Thirty-nine years of lies and this may be the one that ends us.”

Gabriel laughed again.

It lasted only seconds.

Then quiet returned.

Alejandro asked:

“Tell me about Rafael.”

Gabriel became still.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“Tell me anyway.”

Gabriel sat opposite.

“He was younger.”

“By three years.”

Alejandro nodded.

“Reckless.”

“Charming.”

“Everyone liked him.”

“Did you?”

Gabriel smiled.

“He was my best friend.”

The answer hurt.

“He betrayed you.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel looked toward the coffee.

“And I missed him every day after he died.”
