“We apologize for the confusion.”
The Black Passenger looked at him.
“What confusion?”
He froze.
The Flight Attendant said nothing.
The Black Passenger continued:
“My reservation was correct.”
“Yes.”
“My identification was correct.”
“Yes.”
“My seat was correct.”
“Yes.”
She looked at the stained suit.
“So what exactly was confused?”
The Purser had no answer.
The Black Passenger nodded.
“That’s what I thought.”
The Flight Attendant finally spoke.
“I’m sorry.”
The Black Passenger turned toward her.
The apology had arrived only after recognition.
That mattered.
The Black Passenger said:
“For what?”
The Flight Attendant blinked.
“For the spill.”
“Was it accidental?”
Silence.
The passenger in Row 3 kept recording.
The Black Passenger asked again.
“Was it accidental?”
The Flight Attendant looked toward the Purser.
No help.
Then:
“No.”
The cabin reacted instantly.
Whispers.
Gasps.
The Black Passenger remained still.
“Thank you for answering honestly.”
The Flight Attendant stared.
The Black Passenger continued:
“Why did you do it?”
“I…”
No answer.
“Why?”
The Flight Attendant’s eyes filled.
Not tears yet.
Fear.
“I thought…”
She stopped.
The Black Passenger waited.
“I thought you were being dismissive.”
“When?”
“When you declined champagne.”
The passenger across the aisle actually laughed.
The Flight Attendant continued quickly.
“And you didn’t answer me the first time.”
“I did.”
“I asked for sparkling water.”
The Flight Attendant looked down.
The Black Passenger studied her.
“Did you think I belonged in this cabin before you saw my name online?”
The Flight Attendant’s face changed again.
That was the real question.
Everybody knew.
She did not answer.
The Black Passenger nodded slowly.
“Understood.”
Her phone buzzed.
The board again.
Need decision. Vote ready.
The Black Passenger looked toward the gate supervisor.
“Is there somewhere private I can take a five-minute call?”
Immediately:
“Yes.”
The Flight Attendant started:
“I can—”
The Black Passenger looked at her.
“No.”
One word.
The Flight Attendant stopped.
The gate supervisor led her toward the forward galley.
Passengers watched.
Phones followed.
Before disappearing behind the curtain, the Black Passenger turned toward them.
