“A spill?”

the Purser asked.

“Yes.”

The passenger in Row 3 said:

“She dumped it on her.”

The Flight Attendant spun around.

“Sir, stay out of this.”

“I watched you.”

“You’re interfering with crew duties.”

The man lifted his phone.

“I’m recording.”

The Flight Attendant looked toward the Purser.

“See?”

The Black Passenger finally spoke.

“Would you like my version?”

The Purser sighed.

“Go ahead.”

“She placed the meal container over me.”

“She tipped it.”

“She then pressed a napkin into the stain.”

“She took my boarding pass.”

“She took my identification.”

“And she has not returned either.”

The Purser looked toward the Flight Attendant.

“You have her ID?”

The Flight Attendant held it up.

“I was verifying.”

The Purser took it.

Looked at the name.

Something flickered in his face.

The name was familiar.

Not enough.

He had seen it somewhere.

Magazine?

Business article?

Airport advertisement?

He could not place it.

The Flight Attendant whispered:

“She shouldn’t be here.”

The Black Passenger heard.

“So we’re clear.”

She looked directly at the Purser.

“Is there a problem with my reservation?”

The Purser examined the boarding pass.

“No.”

“Is Seat 12A assigned to me?”

“Yes.”

“Is my identification consistent with the ticket?”

“Yes.”

“Then why am I being asked to prove that I belong here?”

The Purser shifted.

The Flight Attendant crossed her arms.

“She’s being difficult.”

The Black Passenger looked at her.

“I have barely moved.”

That got a quiet laugh from somewhere behind them.

The Flight Attendant reddened.

The Purser lowered his voice.

“Ma’am, we’re trying to resolve this.”

“So am I.”

“Perhaps moving seats would calm everyone down.”

The Black Passenger looked around.

Empty seat 14C.

Another farther back.

Then back at him.

“My assigned seat is 12A.”

“Yes.”

“I would prefer to remain in it.”

The Flight Attendant immediately said:

“She’s refusing crew instructions.”

The Black Passenger turned.

“Was that an instruction?”

The Purser hesitated.

“No.”

“It was a suggestion.”

“Then I declined.”

The passenger in Row 4 quietly whispered:

“She’s destroying them without even raising her voice.”

Her phone was livestreaming.

Viewer count:

1,417.

Then 1,563.

Then 1,702.

The Flight Attendant leaned closer.

“Listen.”

The Black Passenger looked up.
