He could now see the rank clearly.

CAPTAIN.

His face turned pale.

“Sir…”

The Captain raised one hand.

“Don’t.”

The Sergeant stopped.

The Captain looked toward the younger Officer.

“Your body camera recording?”

The younger Officer swallowed.

“Yes, Captain.”

“Has it been recording the entire stop?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

The Sergeant turned sharply.

“What?”

The younger Officer looked terrified.

The Captain held his gaze.

“Answer carefully.”

The young Officer swallowed again.

“My camera never turned off.”

The Sergeant’s face collapsed.

The Captain looked toward the Sergeant’s camera.

Then:

“His?”

The younger Officer shook his head.

“He manually deactivated it.”

The Sergeant said:

“That’s not—”

The Captain raised one hand.

Silence.

He looked toward the younger Officer.

“Did you hear a request for five hundred dollars?”

The young man looked at the Sergeant.

Then at the Chief.

Then at the Captain.

His career existed inside the next sentence.

He knew it.

Everyone did.

The young Officer answered:

“Yes.”

The Sergeant stared.

The Captain asked:

“How many times?”

The Officer closed his eyes briefly.

“Three.”

Silence.

The Captain nodded.

“Thank you.”

The Sergeant exploded.

“He’s lying.”

The Police Chief turned.

“Sergeant.”

“He’s covering himself.”

“He—”

The Captain interrupted.

“Say the amount again.”

The Sergeant stopped.

The Captain stepped toward him.

Not aggressively.

Just enough.

“You were very comfortable saying it ten minutes ago.”

The Sergeant’s mouth opened.

Nothing.

The Captain continued:

“Five hundred.”

The Sergeant looked around.

Every official now listening.

The Captain pointed toward the Chief.

“Explain it.”

No answer.

“Explain why a driver was offered a five-hundred-dollar cash option during a lane-stop investigation.”

The Sergeant’s breathing changed.

“It was a joke.”

The younger Officer looked at him.

The Captain noticed.

“A joke.”

The Sergeant nodded quickly.

“Yes.”

“You deactivated your camera for the joke.”

Silence.

“You shoved me for the joke.”

No answer.

“You slapped me.”

The Sergeant swallowed.

“You threatened arrest after I refused.”

The Captain’s voice remained remarkably even.

“All part of the joke?”

No answer.

The Chief looked furious now.

The Captain turned toward him.

“Secure the Sergeant’s body camera.”

The Chief nodded.

“Immediately.”

The Captain continued:

“Secure both cruisers’ dash-camera systems.”

“Dispatch recordings.”

“GPS logs.”

“Traffic-stop history.”

“Any citations issued by this Sergeant for the previous twelve months.”
