Then toward the back seat.

Nothing there.

“What’s in the trunk?”

“Personal belongings.”

“What kind?”

The Captain’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“Officer, why did you stop me?”

The Officer looked up immediately.

There it was.

The shift.

The Captain had spent years training younger officers to recognize that exact moment.

A reasonable question.

A fragile ego.

A decision waiting to happen.

The Officer folded the registration against his palm.

“You crossed the line back there.”

“I don’t believe I did.”

The Officer’s face hardened.

“You calling me a liar?”

“No.”

“I’m saying I didn’t notice crossing a line.”

The Officer leaned closer.

“You argumentative?”

The Captain almost smiled.

“Not particularly.”

“Sounds like it.”

Silence.

The Captain looked toward the cruiser.

Body camera on the Officer’s chest.

Small red light.

Recording.

Good.

He looked back.

“If I crossed the lane marking, write the citation.”

The Officer stared.

“You in a hurry?”

“No.”

“Then relax.”

The Officer turned and walked back toward his cruiser.

The Captain remained still.

He checked the time.

7:22.

His phone vibrated.

One message from the Police Chief.

Everything ready. Command staff begins arriving at 7:45.

The Captain did not answer.

Another message.

Call me when you’re five minutes out.

He locked the phone again.

No reason to involve command.

Not yet.

Maybe this was simply an unpleasant Officer.

Maybe the stop ended with a warning.

Maybe he would enter the precinct twenty minutes later with nothing more dramatic than a story about poor roadside manners.

Then the Officer returned.

Without citation paper.

Without warning form.

He stopped beside the window and handed nothing back.

“Step out.”

The Captain looked at him.

“For the lane violation?”

“Step out.”

The Captain unbuckled his seat belt.

Opened the door.

Stepped onto the pavement.

He was taller than the Officer expected.

Broad shoulders.

Athletic build despite being in his early forties.

The Officer’s eyes moved from the suit to the Captain’s face.

“You carrying?”

The Captain answered truthfully.

“Yes.”

The Officer’s hand moved instantly toward his sidearm.

The Captain lifted both hands.

“It is secured.”

“Where?”

“Right hip.”

“Gun!”

The Officer shouted toward the second patrol car that had just arrived behind them.

The Captain did not turn.

The second Officer stepped out.

Younger.

White.

Mid-twenties.

Nervous face.

Hands ready.

The first Officer moved behind the Captain.

“Hands on the roof.”

The Captain complied.

His palms rested against the white sedan.

The Officer removed the concealed handgun.

Then found the clipped credential beneath the jacket.

His fingers stopped.

The Captain felt it.

The Officer pulled the credential slightly.

Looked down.

Shield.

Department identification.

Rank concealed partly beneath the jacket fold.

The Officer stared.

Then shoved it back.
