The young Officer had heard.

Clearly.

The Sergeant grabbed the Captain’s wrist.

Twisted it behind him.

The Captain did not resist.

The Sergeant shoved him toward the roof.

Then a line of black SUVs turned onto the street.

The Captain saw them first.

His expression did not change.

The Sergeant was too focused on the cuffs.

The first SUV approached slowly.

Then another.

Three total.

The younger Officer stared.

“Sergeant.”

“What?”

“Vehicles.”

The Sergeant glanced.

“Who cares?”

The SUVs pulled directly behind the patrol cars.

Doors opened.

The Police Chief stepped out of the first.

Two senior commanders followed.

Another vehicle opened.

Three more officials.

The Sergeant looked confused.

Then irritated.

“Great.”

The Captain closed his eyes briefly.

He had hoped to resolve the encounter before they arrived.

So much for that.

The Police Chief saw the scene.

The Captain bent slightly against the sedan.

One wrist pinned behind him.

Red mark across his cheek.

His jacket twisted.

The Chief stopped dead.

His face drained.

The Sergeant noticed.

“Chief.”

Relief entered his voice.

“Good.”

He pulled the Captain’s arm tighter.

“This guy’s claiming Central credentials and refusing—”

The Chief walked straight past him.

No greeting.

No question.

He stopped in front of the Captain.

“Captain.”

Silence.

The Sergeant stopped speaking.

The younger Officer’s mouth opened slightly.

The Black Captain looked toward the Chief.

“Morning.”

The Police Chief stared at the red mark on his face.

Then toward the Sergeant’s hand.

“Release him.”

The Sergeant froze.

“Chief?”

“Release.”

“Now.”

The Sergeant immediately let go.

The Captain straightened.

Adjusted his jacket.

The Chief looked at him.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

The Captain’s voice remained calm.

The Chief exhaled.

“We were expecting you at headquarters.”

“I noticed.”

The Chief looked toward the Sergeant.

Then back.

“You were supposed to call when you were five minutes away.”

“I got delayed.”

The Sergeant’s face began changing.

Confusion.

Calculation.

Then recognition.

He looked at the Captain again.

The black suit.

The credential.

The Chief calling him Captain.

The command SUVs.

Senior officers.

The younger Officer whispered almost involuntarily:

“Oh no.”

The Sergeant turned toward him.

“What?”

Nobody answered.

The Police Chief extended one hand toward the Black Captain.

“Welcome to Central.”

Then, deliberately:

“Your entire command staff is waiting to meet their new Police Captain.”

The Sergeant stopped breathing.

The Captain shook the Chief’s hand.

Then looked toward the Sergeant.

No smile.

No triumph.

The Sergeant stared at the department credential partially visible beneath the Captain’s jacket.
