The clean tire cut.
The failed telemetry.
He looked at the Woman.
“Don’t drive it.”
The Chief turned sharply.
“Excuse me?”
The Woman looked at the Single Dad.
“Why?”
He crouched again.
The Security Chief stepped forward.
“I told you to stay away.”
The Woman raised one hand.
“Let him talk.”
The Single Dad pointed.
“Brake line retaining point.”
The Chief looked.
“So?”
“Metal’s fresh.”
“What does that mean?”
“Something rubbed or cut there recently.”
The Chief crouched.
His face changed.
The Single Dad continued.
“Could be service damage.”
“Could be nothing.”
“But the sidewall cut is too clean for what I’d expect from debris.”
The Chief looked toward the tire lying on the gravel.
He examined it.
Then the line.
The Woman stood very still.
“What are you saying?”
The Single Dad looked at her.
“I’m saying whoever changed or handled this wheel last deserves a conversation.”
The Chief reached toward the line.
The Single Dad immediately said:
“Don’t.”
Everyone stopped.
“Why?”
“If someone tampered with it, don’t disturb it.”
The Chief stared.
The Single Dad raised both hands.
“I’m not an investigator.”
“I fix things because I can’t afford not to.”
“But that doesn’t look right.”
The Chief stood.
He issued instructions.
Photographs.
No one touches the vehicle.
Call the technical team.
Secure the shoulder.
Contact local law enforcement.
The security convoy transformed instantly from protection to investigation.
The Woman watched.
The Single Dad stepped toward his pickup.
The Chief looked over.
“Where are you going?”
“Home.”
The Woman almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because everyone else around her had suddenly become intense.
This man still thought dinner mattered.
She walked toward him.
“Wait.”
He stopped.
She looked toward the damaged vehicle.
Then back at him.
“What if you’re right?”
“Then I’m glad you didn’t drive.”
“That’s all?”
“What else?”
“You found something my security team didn’t.”
“They weren’t changing the tire.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You keep refusing to be impressed with yourself.”
“I’m very impressive to my daughter.”
That made her smile again.
Then the Security Chief called.
“Ma’am.”
His face was pale.
She turned.
One of the security technicians had arrived from the third SUV.
He held a flashlight beneath the wheel well.
The Chief walked toward the Woman.
“We found a secondary cut.”
Her expression hardened.
“How serious?”
The technician answered carefully.
“Brake hose outer layer deliberately scored.”
“Not fully penetrated.”
“Once pressure and vibration increased, failure could have occurred.”
The Woman looked toward the Single Dad.
He had gone still.
The Chief continued.
“And there’s adhesive residue near the vehicle tracker housing.”
“What does that mean?”
“Possible signal-blocking device.”
“Removed now.”
The Woman looked at the SUVs surrounding her.
