The Woman studied him.

“Are you a mechanic?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

He pointed toward the jack in his pickup bed.

“Single father.”

She frowned.

“That explains tire repair?”

“It explains learning anything that saves money.”

For the first time, something shifted in her face.

Almost amusement.

Not quite.

She looked toward the SUV.

“If you damage anything, I’m not accepting responsibility.”

The Single Dad laughed once.

“Good start.”

She looked at him sharply.

He raised his hands again.

“Sorry.”

Then he walked toward the SUV.

Not toward her.

He crouched beside the damaged wheel.

The tire had a narrow tear near the sidewall.

He frowned.

That was strange.

Not impossible.

Road debris could do it.

But the cut looked clean.

He ran one finger near it without touching.

The Woman watched.

“What?”

“Nothing yet.”

He walked around the SUV.

Checked the spare.

Full-size.

Good.

He returned to his pickup.

Carried over a jack, lug wrench, breaker bar, and wheel chock.

The Woman remained several feet away.

The Single Dad noticed.

He liked that.

Caution was sensible.

He placed the chock.

Set the parking brake after asking her permission to enter the vehicle.

Then began loosening the lug nuts before raising the SUV.

The Woman watched in silence.

He worked efficiently.

No performance.

No unnecessary conversation.

No attempt to impress.

That made her suspicious in a different way.

People almost always wanted something.

Money.

Recognition.

A phone number.

Access.

A favor later.

She had spent the last fourteen years learning that generosity often arrived with invisible invoices.

The man removed the wheel.

His forearms showed dark streaks of road grime.

His white T-shirt picked up dust almost immediately.

She glanced at his truck.

Old.

Not neglected.

Just old.

The driver’s door carried a small dent.

Child’s sticker on the rear glass.

A faded purple star.

The Woman looked toward him again.

“You have a daughter?”

He glanced up.

“Eight.”

“You said single father.”

“Yes.”

“Where is her mother?”

The question left her mouth before she could decide whether it was appropriate.

His hands stopped briefly.

Then continued.

“She died.”

The Woman’s expression changed.

“I’m sorry.”

“Thank you.”

No explanation.

No dramatic grief.

She did not ask again.

The Single Dad lifted the damaged tire away.

Then he paused.

Behind the wheel assembly, something caught his eye.

A slight scrape near a brake-line retaining clip.

Fresh metal.

He leaned closer.

The Woman noticed.

“What now?”

He did not answer immediately.

He followed the line visually.

Nothing obvious.

Maybe ordinary service damage.

He did not want to invent danger.
