Only fatigue.
Her phone buzzed.
The Single Dad.
You okay?
She replied:
I don’t know.
His answer:
That counts as an answer.
She stared at it.
Then called.
He picked up.
She said:
“I want to see you.”
He answered:
“Okay.”
No questions.
He came to her building.
Security knew him now.
The first time he entered headquarters, he wore the same kind of white T-shirt she had seen beside the road.
She almost laughed.
He stepped into her office.
Floor-to-ceiling windows.
Artwork.
A desk bigger than his daughter’s bedroom.
He looked around.
“This is ridiculous.”
The Woman laughed.
Then cried.
Without warning.
He said nothing.
He moved closer.
Stopped.
She stepped into him.
His arms closed around her.
No advice.
No congratulations.
No speech.
She cried until exhaustion replaced fear.
Later they sat on the office floor because she did not want the desk between them.
The Single Dad leaned against the wall.
The Woman rested her head on his shoulder.
“Do you know what bothers me?”
“What?”
“If you had kept driving…”
He understood.
She continued.
“They planned around security.”
“Schedules.”
“Vehicles.”
“Systems.”
“Nobody planned for a random man deciding he couldn’t leave somebody with a flat tire.”
He smiled faintly.
“That is difficult to model.”
She looked at him.
“You changed my life.”
His expression became uncomfortable.
“Don’t.”
“Why?”
“Because then it becomes a debt.”
She stared.
He continued.
“I stopped.”
“That’s it.”
“You don’t owe me a story.”
“A relationship.”
“Gratitude forever.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
Her eyes filled again.
“That may be why I love you.”
Silence.
The Single Dad looked at her.
She froze.
She had not planned to say it.
He asked quietly:
“Do you?”
The Woman laughed nervously.
“I apparently do.”
He smiled.
She became irritated.
“Are you going to say something?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“I’m enjoying this.”
She hit his arm.
He laughed.
Then took her hand.
“I love you too.”
The Woman looked down.
For someone who could negotiate billion-dollar contracts, she had no response.
He kissed her forehead.
That was enough.
Their relationship became public six months later.
Not through choice.
A photographer caught them at his daughter’s school fundraiser.

The Single Dad hated it.
The Woman hated it more.
