The Husband looked away.

The flight attendant looked toward the floor.

The White Woman finally said:

“Because I made a bad assumption.”

The child nodded.

“What assumption?”

The woman’s face reddened.

The Black Woman almost intervened.

Then decided against it.

The White Woman answered quietly.

“That you and your mother didn’t belong in this cabin.”

“Because we’re Black?”

The question landed harder than anything an adult had said.

The White Woman looked like she wanted to disappear.

She whispered:

“I think that was part of it.”

The Black Woman stared.

There.

Not complete understanding.

But honesty.

The girl looked toward her mother.

“Okay.”

Then she returned to her seat.

Children sometimes ended conversations adults wanted to dramatize forever.

The Black Woman sat beside her.

The Husband remained in the aisle.

He looked toward his wife.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“Call me when you land.”

“I will.”

The girl raised her hand.

“Can Dad fly with us?”

The Husband laughed.

“I have meetings.”

“You own the plane.”

“That does not cancel meetings.”

“It should.”

The cabin laughed softly.

Tension broke.

The Husband kissed her forehead.

Then walked toward the exit.

Before leaving, he stopped beside the flight attendant.

“Thank you for trying to manage this.”

Her eyes widened.

She had expected blame.

He continued.

“Operations may interview you.”

“Tell them exactly what happened.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Do not protect anyone.”

The flight attendant nodded.

Then he looked toward the pilot.

“Depart on time.”

He left.

The aircraft door closed.

Engines started.

The White Woman remained silent.

The Black Woman helped her daughter put away the notebook for takeoff.

As the aircraft began moving, the girl whispered:

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Did Dad really own this one?”

The Black Woman smiled.

“Through the company.”

“That means yes.”

“Technically.”

The girl nodded.

Then:

“Would that lady have been nice if she knew?”

The Black Woman stopped smiling.

That was the question.

“I don’t know.”

“Should she have been nice anyway?”

“Yes.”

“Because we were passengers?”

The Black Woman looked at her.

“Because we were people.”

The girl nodded.

That answer she understood.

The aircraft took off.

New York dropped beneath the clouds.

For the first thirty minutes, nobody spoke across the aisle.

Meal service began.
