“My daughter is nine.”

“Children can still dress appropriately.”

The girl looked down at her hoodie.

The Black Woman’s voice became colder.

“Do not comment on my child’s clothing.”

The White Woman laughed.

“I was trying to help.”

“No.”

“You were trying to establish hierarchy.”

The woman blinked.

“What?”

The Black Woman leaned back.

“You want to know whether my handbag is real.”

“Whether my daughter belongs in this cabin.”

“Whether our clothes satisfy you.”

“You keep looking for information that tells you where to place us beneath you.”

The cabin became quieter.

Several passengers stopped pretending not to listen.

The White Woman’s face flushed.

“That is an outrageous accusation.”

The Black Woman said nothing.

The White Woman turned toward the flight attendant.

“Can you do something?”

The flight attendant approached.

“What seems to be the issue?”

The White Woman pointed across the aisle.

“She’s being hostile.”

The Black Woman looked toward the flight attendant.

“I asked her to stop commenting on my daughter.”

The flight attendant’s face changed.

She looked at the White Woman.

“Ma’am.”

The White Woman interrupted.

“Oh, please.”

“I was talking about cabin standards.”

“There are no special clothing requirements beyond basic safety and decency.”

The flight attendant looked toward the little girl.

The child’s hoodie was clean.

Pink backpack.

Jeans.

Nothing remotely inappropriate.

The White Woman folded her arms.

“This service has changed.”

Nobody answered.

The Black Woman looked toward the flight attendant.

“We’re fine.”

The attendant nodded.

“If you need anything, please let me know.”

“Thank you.”

The White Woman looked offended that the attendant had not chosen her side.

She turned toward the window.

The cabin calmed.

For approximately four minutes.

Then the White Woman reached for the gold clutch.

It happened quickly.

She wanted the polished console beside her seat clear.

The clutch rested partially on the shared ledge between seat spaces.

Without asking, she pushed it away.

The gold shell-shaped bag slid across the surface.

The Black Woman caught it before it fell.

The child gasped.

The Black Woman stood.

Not aggressively.

But instantly.

Every nearby passenger looked up.

The White Woman stared at her.

“It was in my space.”

The Black Woman held the clutch.

“That does not give you permission to touch my property.”

“Oh, for God’s sake.”

“Do not touch my belongings again.”

The White Woman stood too.

She was shorter.

The aisle narrowed the distance.

The flight attendant hurried over.

“Ladies.”

The Black Woman held one hand out toward the child.

The girl immediately stood and moved behind her mother.

That protective movement changed the visual tone of the encounter.

Now this was not two adults arguing.

A child was watching.

The White Woman noticed.

She did not soften.

Instead she pointed toward the rear of the aircraft.

“You and the kid can wait back there while they fix whatever mistake put you up here.”
