“Yes.”
“Based on?”
Vanessa lifted the cloth.
“Experience.”
Amara nodded.
“How much experience?”
“Fifteen years.”
“And during those fifteen years, do you always decide whether somebody belongs before asking their name?”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Your name isn't relevant to whether you violated dealership rules.”
“Which rule?”
“Unauthorized access.”
“I was told to sit inside.”
“By whom?”
“Someone who works here.”
“Name.”
Amara paused.
“Charles.”
Vanessa laughed.
Actually laughed.
“Charles.”
“Yes.”
“Charles Sterling.”
“Yes.”
“The dealership owner.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Do you know how many people come in here claiming they know Charles?”
Amara looked toward the building.
“Probably fewer than after today.”
Vanessa did not understand.
Behind the glass, Molly whispered:
“She sounds like she actually knows him.”
Ethan nodded.
“That’s what I tried to say.”
Another salesman, Mark, joined them.
“What’s happening?”
“Vanessa thinks she climbed into the X9.”
“Did she?”
“Yeah.”
“Is she an influencer?”
Ethan looked toward Amara.
“Doesn't seem like it.”
Mark shrugged.
“Vanessa will handle it.”
That sentence stayed with Ethan.
Vanessa will handle it.
Everyone had spent years saying variations of that.
Customer too demanding?
Vanessa.
Financing dispute?
Vanessa.
Salesperson needs schedule change?
Vanessa.
VIP arrival?
Vanessa.
Complaint?
Vanessa.
She became power because everyone practiced giving it to her.
Outside, Vanessa gestured toward security.
A uniformed guard near the lobby noticed.
“Tom.”
He began approaching.
Amara watched.
Vanessa said:
“We're done.”
“Are we?”
“Yes.”
“You can leave voluntarily or security can escort you.”
Amara looked toward Tom.
Middle-aged.
He slowed as he approached.
Something in Amara’s posture told him this did not feel like a normal trespassing problem.
Vanessa pointed.
“She accessed private inventory without authorization.”
Tom looked at Amara.
“Ma’am?”
Amara asked:
“Do you want my side?”
Tom opened his mouth.
Vanessa interrupted.
“She has already been told repeatedly.”
Amara nodded.
“There’s another pattern.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“What pattern?”
“You answer for everyone.”
Tom looked uncomfortable.
Amara turned toward him.
“My name is Amara Wilson.”
Recognition flashed through his face.
Not complete.
Something.
He had seen that name.
Maybe delivery documents.
Maybe staff emails.
Vanessa noticed.
“What?”
Tom looked toward the car.
Then Amara.
“Wilson?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa laughed impatiently.
“That means nothing.”
Tom lowered his voice.
