“That’s the problem.”

He looked at her.

“Excuse me?”

“You refuse to cooperate.”

“With rules you invented.”

The Neighbor Woman moved closer.

“These aren’t invented.”

“Then show me.”

“I’ve sent you emails.”

“You sent me your opinions.”

She crossed her arms.

“The city noise ordinance clearly prohibits excessive mechanical equipment.”

The Homeowner nodded.

“Yes.”

“So you admit it.”

“My pool pump is not excessive noise.”

“I can hear it.”

“You live behind me.”

“That is exactly my point.”

The Homeowner looked toward her house.

The fence was nearly seven feet tall.

Trees stood between the properties.

His pump was enclosed inside a small insulated equipment housing.

The only way someone inside her house could hear it clearly was by standing close to the fence.

Or deliberately listening for it.

He said:

“If you believe I violated a city ordinance, call the city.”

“I tried.”

He almost smiled.

“What happened?”

“They told me it was a civil issue.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“They told you they weren’t going to enforce your imaginary rule.”

Her jaw tightened.

“You think this is funny.”

“I think you climbed a seven-foot fence to complain about a pool pump.”

The Neighbor Woman stepped closer.

The Homeowner’s amusement disappeared.

“Back up.”

She ignored him.

“You have been disrespectful since the day I moved here.”

“I barely speak to you.”

“That is disrespectful.”

The Homeowner stared.

The Neighbor Woman pointed toward his house.

“You act like because you’ve lived here longer, you can do whatever you want.”

“On my property?”

He nodded.

“Within the law, yes.”

Her face reddened.

“You are exactly the kind of neighbor who ruins communities.”

The Homeowner bent down and picked up the garden hose.

“We’re done.”

He turned.

The Neighbor Woman grabbed the back of his shirt.

The Homeowner froze.

Not because she was strong.

Because the action changed everything.

He slowly turned his head.

“Let go.”

The Neighbor Woman tightened her fist around the fabric near his shoulder.

“No.”

His voice became quieter.

“Take your hand off me.”

“You’re going to listen.”

The Homeowner carefully turned around.

Her hand slid to the front of his shirt.

She gripped the fabric near his chest.

The Homeowner did not touch her.

Not yet.

The Neighbor Woman pointed at his face with her free hand.

“You think that fence means you can hide back here and ignore everyone.”

The Homeowner looked down at her hand.

Then at her.

“You climbed into my yard.”

“I came over to speak with you.”

“You climbed over a locked fence.”

“Because you refused to answer.”

“That is called trespassing.”

Her eyes widened.

“Don’t threaten me.”

The Homeowner almost laughed.

“You are holding my shirt.”

She pulled slightly.

“Maybe if you listened the first time, people wouldn’t have to come find you.”

The Homeowner lifted one hand.
