"How?"
The woman shook her head.
"It's public."
"No."
The Chief stepped down from the porch.
"Our household information is restricted through the neighborhood association."
The woman swallowed.
"I'm on the community welcome committee."
The homeowner raised his eyebrows.
That was new.
His wife looked unconvinced.
"The welcome committee doesn't have access to private contact records."
The neighbor looked toward her house.
"I may have heard it from someone."
The Chief studied her.
The Officer's posture changed again.
The situation was becoming something more than an embarrassing misunderstanding.
The Chief turned toward him.
"Officer, what information did dispatch receive?"
He checked.
"Caller reported unknown male trespassing, possible burglary preparation, possession of a large cutting tool, and refusal to leave."
The homeowner laughed bitterly.
"Burglary preparation?"
The Chief looked at the neighbor.
"You told dispatch he might be preparing to burglarize my home?"
The woman raised both hands.
"I didn't say he definitely was."
"That's not the point."
"I was scared."
The homeowner stared at her.
"You walked toward me."
The Officer looked up.
The woman immediately looked at him.
"That's not true."
The homeowner pointed toward the camera above the garage.
"Want to check?"
The Officer followed his finger.
So did the Chief.
The neighbor's face changed.
The Chief knew the cameras existed.
She had approved the installation herself after a series of vehicle break-ins on the block.
The Officer asked:
"Does that cover the yard?"
The homeowner nodded.
"Everything."
The woman spoke quickly.
"This is getting ridiculous."
The Chief looked at her.
"Then the footage should clear it up."
The neighbor stepped backward.
"I don't have time for this."
The Officer immediately said:
"Ma'am, please stay until we finish the call."
She froze.
The homeowner folded his arms.
The Chief looked toward the front door.
"Let's review it."
They moved onto the porch.
The homeowner opened the camera application on a wall-mounted tablet just inside the entryway.
He selected the front-yard feed.
The image appeared.
There he was.
Trimming hedges.
The timestamp showed 9:07 a.m.
The neighbor appeared at 9:18.
The recording had audio.
"Who are you?"
The Officer watched.
"Why are you doing it here?"
The homeowner's calm responses played clearly.
Then:
"You don't look like someone who lives here."
The Police Chief's jaw tightened.
Nobody spoke.
The video continued.
"What does someone who lives here look like?"
The neighbor's recorded voice answered:
"Don't make this into something it's not."
The current version of the woman standing behind them stared at the floor.
The Chief did not.
She watched every second.
Then the footage reached the call.
The neighbor moved several feet away.
Her voice became audible.
"Yes, there's a suspicious Black man on private property."
The room went completely silent.
The woman looked up suddenly.
"I didn't mean."
The Chief raised one hand.
"Don't."
The footage continued.
"He has some kind of large powered cutting tool."
