The Chief glanced at her husband.

"What did he tell you?"

The woman became defensive.

"He claimed he lived here."

The Chief's expression changed.

"He claimed?"

The woman heard the word and immediately regretted it.

"I mean, he said he lived here."

"Which is true."

"Yes."

The Chief waited.

The neighbor shifted.

"But I didn't know that at the time."

The homeowner finally spoke.

"I told you."

The woman looked at him.

"You didn't prove it."

The Chief turned slowly toward her.

"Prove it to whom?"

Silence.

The woman looked toward the Officer.

Then back at the Chief.

"I was just concerned."

"About what?"

"Neighborhood safety."

The Chief looked around.

Bright morning.

Quiet street.

A man trimming a hedge outside his own house.

She folded her arms.

"Tell me specifically what you saw that concerned you."

The woman hesitated.

The Officer remained still.

His body camera was recording every second.

The woman pointed vaguely toward the trimmer.

"He had equipment."

The homeowner stared.

The Chief's eyes moved toward the hedge trimmer.

"A hedge trimmer."

"Yes."

"While standing beside a hedge."

The woman flushed.

"He looked suspicious."

The Chief's face remained still.

"What did he do?"

"He was here."

"At his home."

"I didn't know it was his home."

"He told you."

The neighbor's voice became sharper.

"I had no way to know whether he was telling the truth."

The Chief looked directly at her.

"What made you assume he was lying?"

That question changed the atmosphere.

The neighbor looked away.

The Officer shifted slightly.

The homeowner said nothing.

The woman crossed her arms tighter.

"I didn't assume anything."

The Chief waited.

"You called the police."

"Because I was concerned."

"You told the officer my husband was trespassing."

"I believed he might be."

"After he told you he lived here."

The woman became angry.

"I was trying to protect your property."

The Chief's expression hardened.

"I didn't ask you to."

The words landed quietly.

The woman blinked.

The Chief continued.

"My husband didn't ask you to."

Another pause.

"Nobody at this residence asked you to monitor our yard."

The woman looked embarrassed now.

The Officer glanced down at his device.

The homeowner watched her confidence collapse one layer at a time.

But something bothered him.

The woman was not simply embarrassed.

She seemed afraid of another detail.

He remembered something she had said.

I know the woman who owns this house.

He turned toward his wife.

"Ask her how she knew your name was in the neighborhood directory."

The woman's eyes widened.

The Chief looked at him.

Then toward the neighbor.

"What?"

The homeowner explained.

"She told me she knew the homeowner."

The Chief's expression became colder.
