The Officer did too.

She pointed toward the house.

"Ask her."

The officer frowned.

"Ask her what?"

"Ask the actual homeowner."

The Black man folded his arms.

The woman looked at him triumphantly.

"Let's see if she says you're her husband."

The Officer looked uncomfortable.

This had become ridiculous.

But he still needed to finish the call professionally.

He turned toward the homeowner.

"Would your wife be willing to come outside?"

The homeowner's smile grew.

"Oh, absolutely."

The woman crossed her arms.

"Good."

The homeowner turned toward the front door.

He did not move.

He simply called out.

"Honey?"

No answer.

He called louder.

"Can you come out here for a second?"

The woman smiled.

The officer looked toward the porch.

Nothing happened for several seconds.

Then the deadbolt turned.

The front door opened.

The woman on the sidewalk straightened.

The Black homeowner slipped both gloves into his back pocket.

The Officer's body posture changed before anyone said a word.

A Black woman stepped onto the porch.

Late forties.

Tall.

Calm.

She wore a dark police command uniform.

Gold insignia gleamed against the collar.

Command bars decorated her sleeves.

Her badge caught the sunlight.

Her hair was neat and pulled back.

Her expression shifted from confusion to concern as she saw the cruiser.

Then she recognized the responding officer.

He recognized her at exactly the same moment.

His shoulders snapped straighter.

"Chief."

The neighbor's smile disappeared.

The Black homeowner looked at his wife.

"Morning."

She looked at him.

Then toward the hedge.

Then toward the officer.

"What happened?"

The Officer seemed suddenly very aware of every word coming next.

"Chief, we received a suspicious-person call."

Her eyebrows lifted.

"Here?"

"Yes, ma'am."

She looked at her husband.

He nodded toward the woman.

"She called."

The Police Chief turned toward the neighbor.

The woman appeared frozen.

The Chief had seen her before.

Neighborhood meetings.

Holiday events.

A community safety panel several months earlier.

They had exchanged polite greetings.

Nothing more.

The Chief looked back at the Officer.

"What exactly was reported?"

The Officer checked his notes.

"A male subject allegedly trespassing and using landscaping equipment at a private residence."

The Chief looked at her husband.

Then at the half-trimmed hedge.

Then back at the neighbor.

Her face became completely unreadable.

"He's trimming our hedges."

Nobody spoke.

The Officer nodded once.

"Yes, Chief."

The neighbor stepped forward.

"I didn't know."

The Police Chief looked toward her.

"You didn't know what?"

The woman opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

The Chief waited.

The homeowner stayed silent.

The woman tried again.

"I thought he was someone who wasn't supposed to be here."
