The teenager looked uncomfortable.
The Captain asked:
“After you saw my receipt?”
The woman looked down.
“No.”
“That’s the part you should think about.”
She nodded.
The Captain continued.
“Believing your son initially isn't strange.”
“But when the facts stopped supporting the story, you kept protecting the story.”
The woman swallowed.
“Yes.”
“You even told dispatch I was confrontational.”
She looked embarrassed.
“I felt like you were.”
“Because I wouldn't surrender my property?”
No answer.
The Captain nodded.
“Exactly.”
The teenager spoke.
“Mom.”
She looked at him.
“You made it worse.”
The words hurt.
The Captain saw that.
The boy continued.
“I was wrong first.”
“But you made it sound like he did something.”
His mother stared.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
She had no answer.
The Officer looked toward the teenager.
That question was better than anything she might have asked.
The mother eventually said:
“I don’t know.”
The Captain nodded.
That was the first honest answer she had given.
He looked toward the Officer.
“Call disposition?”
She answered.
“Property misunderstanding.”
“Unfounded theft complaint.”
“No criminal conduct observed.”
The Captain nodded.
“Good.”
The mother looked relieved.
Then the Captain added:
“And include the progression.”
The Officer nodded.
“Initial accusation continued after purchase documentation was shown.”
“Yes, sir.”
The mother looked uneasy again.
“Why does that need to be there?”
The Captain looked at her.
“Because that's what happened.”
She went quiet.
The Officer returned to her patrol vehicle.
Before leaving, she looked toward the Captain.
“Can I speak with you privately?”
He nodded.
They stepped several yards away.
The Officer lowered her voice.
“I didn’t recognize you until I saw the license.”
“I know.”
“I should have.”
“No.”
She looked surprised.
The Captain continued.
“I’ve been at the precinct four days.”
“Half the shift hasn't met me.”
She nodded.
“Still.”
“No.”
He held up one hand.
“That’s not what I’m thinking about.”
The Officer waited.
The Captain looked toward the patrol car.
“What did dispatch tell you?”
“Possible grocery theft.”
“Black male.”
“Confrontational.”
“Large build.”
“Black SUV.”
The Captain nodded.
“What did you expect before you arrived?”
The Officer hesitated.
He watched her.
Eventually:
“I expected an active dispute.”
“More specific.”
She looked uncomfortable.
“A suspect refusing to return stolen property.”
The Captain nodded.
“Before you had spoken to anyone.”
“Yes.”
“Did that affect how you approached me?”
The Officer thought.
“You told me to keep my hands visible.”
