“No.”

“Blocked them from leaving?”

“No.”

The teenager shook his head too.

The Officer looked toward the mother.

“Did he?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly do you want police to do?”

The mother stared.

“Make him return our groceries.”

The Officer looked at the receipt again.

“I currently have evidence that he purchased these.”

“But.”

“I don’t have evidence they're yours.”

The woman’s mouth tightened.

Then she looked at the Officer’s uniform.

Something in her expression suggested she believed rank itself should produce obedience.

“Can’t you at least make him come inside with us?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't have a legal reason to detain him based on what you've told me.”

The woman stared.

“This is unbelievable.”

The Black man said nothing.

The Officer turned toward him.

“Sir, do you have identification?”

“Yes.”

“May I see it?”

The man hesitated for half a second.

Then reached toward his wallet.

The Officer watched his hand.

He removed his driver's license.

She took it.

Her eyes dropped to the name.

Then something changed.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

The Officer looked at the license.

Then at him.

Then back at the license.

The Black man noticed.

So did the mother.

“What?”

The Officer did not answer.

Her posture straightened.

Her face changed from routine professionalism to sudden recognition.

She looked at the Black man again.

“Captain?”

Silence.

The teenager looked up.

The mother stopped moving.

The Black man gave the smallest nod.

“Officer.”

The Officer’s eyes widened.

“I didn’t realize it was you.”

The mother looked between them.

“What is happening?”

Neither answered immediately.

The Officer handed the license back.

Then stood slightly straighter.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

The mother noticed.

“Do you know him?”

The Officer looked toward her.

“Yes.”

“How?”

The Officer paused.

“He's my newly appointed precinct commander.”

The parking lot went quiet.

Not literally.

Cars still moved.

Carts still rattled.

A child still cried somewhere near the entrance.

But the small circle around the SUV became completely still.

The mother stared at the Black man.

The teenager’s face went pale.

The Black man returned his license to his wallet.

The woman removed her sunglasses.

“You're police?”

The Captain looked at her.

“That shouldn’t matter.”

She blinked.

“What?”

He gestured toward the bags.

“The groceries were mine before you knew what I did for work.”

The woman opened her mouth.

The Captain continued.

“The receipt was real before she recognized me.”

The Officer remained quiet.

The teenage boy looked down.

The mother tried to recover.

“I never said you stole them because.”

She stopped.

The Captain waited.

“Because what?”

She had no answer.

The Officer looked toward the mother.

“You called police and reported a theft based on your son seeing someone with similar groceries.”
