The Black man removed the folded receipt slowly.

The Officer held out her hand.

He gave it to her.

She examined it.

Her eyes moved over the timestamp.

Items.

Payment information.

Then she looked inside the cargo area.

“Can I compare?”

“Please.”

The Officer read.

“Whole-grain bread.”

She looked.

There.

“Chicken breasts.”

There.

“Oranges.”

There.

“Sparkling water.”

There.

“Dog food.”

There.

“Flowers.”

There.

The mother crossed her arms.

“That could still be our cart.”

The Officer looked up.

“What?”

“He could've taken the cart after paying.”

The teenager finally spoke.

“Mom.”

She ignored him.

The Officer stared at her.

“Are you saying he paid for these groceries and then somehow they became yours?”

The mother’s mouth opened.

She had not anticipated hearing her theory repeated logically.

“That’s not what I mean.”

The Officer waited.

The woman tried again.

“I mean maybe he paid for other groceries.”

The Black man looked toward the sky.

The Officer looked down at the receipt again.

Then inside the bags.

The quantities matched.

Brands matched.

Even the flowers matched the item description.

The Officer asked the teenager:

“Did you see this man physically take your cart?”

The boy hesitated.

His mother turned.

“Tell her.”

The Officer noticed.

“Look at me.”

The teenager did.

“Did you see him take your cart?”

“I saw him with groceries.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

The boy looked toward the SUV.

Then toward the store entrance.

“I thought they were ours.”

“Did you see him take them?”

“No.”

The mother snapped.

“You told me you did.”

“I said I thought he had our stuff.”

“That is not what you said.”

The teenager’s face reddened.

The Black man stayed silent.

The Officer looked toward the mother.

“You told dispatch your son saw him take your groceries.”

The woman became defensive.

“That is what he implied.”

The teenager said quietly:

“I didn’t.”

The mother turned.

“Seriously?”

The Officer stepped slightly between them.

“Let's keep this calm.”

The mother looked furious now.

At her son.

At the Black man.

Perhaps at the entire situation for refusing to become what she expected.

She pointed toward the groceries.

“Our items were almost identical.”

The Officer nodded.

“That happens.”

“Not this identical.”

The Black man spoke.

“It's a grocery store.”

The mother glared.

“There. That attitude.”

The Officer looked at him.

“What attitude?”

The woman seemed surprised that the Officer asked.

“He’s been condescending the whole time.”

The Officer turned toward the man.

“Have you threatened either of them?”

“No.”

“Touched them?”
