The Woman did not blink.

“I’m ending your access.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

“You’re not buying another animal here.”

The Buyer stepped closer.

“You speak for him now?”

“I speak for the books.”

The Buyer smiled again.

But nothing friendly remained.

“You should be careful.”

The Woman held the ledger against her body.

“I am.”

“You’re alone.”

She looked around.

Open land.

Empty barnyard.

House.

No Rancher.

No neighbor.

Then back.

“Yes.”

The Buyer waited for fear.

He found none.

Not because she had none.

Her heart was pounding.

Her hands wanted to shake.

Courage was not calm.

It was choosing what mattered while your body begged you to run.

The Woman said:

“You’re done here.”

The Buyer stared another second.

Then mounted.

“You’ll regret this.”

The Woman answered:

“I already regret how long nobody checked your numbers.”

He kicked the horse forward.

Dust exploded.

The Woman stood until he disappeared.

Then her hand shook.

Hard.

She gripped the ledger with both hands until it stopped.

Only then did she continue hanging laundry.

The Rancher noticed the hoof marks immediately.

He dismounted.

The Son jumped down behind him.

“Someone came.”

“Yes.”

The Rancher looked toward the porch.

The Woman sat with the Son’s reader in her lap.

Calm.

Too calm.

He walked over.

She finished the sentence before looking up.

“Go wash.”

She told the Son.

The boy glanced between them.

Then obeyed.

The Rancher waited until the door closed.

“Buyer?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He wanted cattle.”

“And?”

“I said no.”

The Rancher stared.

“You faced him alone?”

“Yes.”

“You should’ve waited.”

The Woman looked at him.

“If I waited, he would still believe he had a place here.”

The Rancher’s jaw tightened.

“That man isn’t harmless.”

“I noticed.”

“You could’ve been hurt.”

She stood.

“Are you angry because I was wrong?”

“No.”

“Then because I didn’t ask permission?”

His eyes flashed.

“Because I wasn’t here.”

Silence.

There.

Truth.

Not control.

Fear.

The Woman’s expression softened.

The Rancher looked away.

“I should’ve been here.”

“You cannot be everywhere.”

“I should’ve been here.”

She stepped closer.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“I’m fine.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“What is?”

The Rancher stopped.

He did not have language for it yet.

The Woman saw the answer anyway.

She touched his forearm.

One brief touch.

Then:

“Come inside.”

“Something else happened.”

The Rancher followed.

The debt was paid.

Every dollar.

The Woman placed the ledger in front of him.

Four hundred.

Exact.

The bank payment.

Saved.

The Rancher stared.
