“And because I don’t know how to ask you to stay without sounding like a man who is afraid you won’t.”

The Woman’s eyes shone.

“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said all week.”

He almost smiled.

Then:

“Stay.”

She exhaled.

He added:

“If you want.”

The Woman looked at him.

“I need time.”

The Rancher nodded.

“Take it.”

That answer mattered.

She knew.

The Buyer did not disappear.

Men who made money through quiet unfairness rarely accepted exposure politely.

Two weeks later, he returned.

This time with another man.

The Rancher met him at the fence.

The Woman stood on the porch.

The Buyer smiled.

“I hear you’re shopping cattle elsewhere.”

“I am.”

“You’ll lose money.”

“I already lost money.”

The Buyer’s smile vanished.

“Your woman filling your head?”

The Rancher’s face hardened.

“She isn’t my woman.”

The Woman heard.

Something inside her dipped.

Then the Rancher continued:

“She belongs to herself.”

The feeling returned stronger.

The Buyer laughed.

“Fine.”

“Your bookkeeper.”

“She’s better at business than either of us.”

“Apparently.”

The Buyer took a paper from his coat.

“You owe me transport fees.”

The Rancher looked at it.

The Woman came down the porch steps.

“Let me.”

The Buyer rolled his eyes.

The Rancher handed her the paper.

She read.

Then looked up.

“No.”

The Buyer snapped:

“No?”

“No contract.”

“No signed authorization.”

“No invoice matching the dates.”

“This is invented.”

The Buyer looked at the Rancher.

“You let her speak to me like this?”

The Rancher glanced at the Woman.

Then back.

“I usually can’t stop her.”

The Woman almost laughed.

The Buyer did not.

He stepped forward.

“Careful.”

The Rancher stepped between them instantly.

Everything changed.

Not because he threatened.

Because he did not need to.

The Buyer stopped.

The Rancher said:

“You warned her once.”

“Do it again and we stop discussing accounts.”

The Buyer’s jaw tightened.

The Woman touched the Rancher’s arm.

Not to restrain him.

To remind him she was there.

The Rancher stayed still.

The Buyer looked from one to the other.

Then:

“You’ll regret this partnership.”

The Woman answered:

“That would require missing you.”

The Buyer turned.

Mounted.

Left.

The Rancher waited until the dust faded.

Then looked at her.

“You enjoy that too much.”

“Yes.”

“You scared?”

“Terrified.”

He stared.

She smiled faintly.

“Courage and terror live together.”

The Rancher looked at her differently after that.

Not admiration alone.

Recognition.

She was not fearless.

She simply acted while afraid.

That made her braver.

Autumn came.

Cattle sold through a new buyer.

Fair price.

Higher than expected.

The Rancher returned from market with cash.

He placed it on the table.

The Woman counted.

Recorded.

Then looked at him.

“How does honesty feel?”

“Expensive.”

She frowned.
