“Listen carefully.”

“This video helps tremendously.”

“It does not mean we start celebrating.”

“Why?”

“Because I want every official record preserved before people know exactly what we have.”

Nia’s expression changed.

“You think this is bigger.”

“I don't know.”

“That's why I'm worried.”

At 5:17 p.m., Nia walked out of the precinct.

No charges filed.

Not dismissed.

Not cleared officially.

Released pending further investigation.

Evan reached her first.

He hugged her so hard she almost lost balance.

She pressed her face against his chest.

For thirty seconds, neither cared about lawyers, cameras, or strangers.

Then Nia looked over his shoulder.

Margaret stood near a bench.

Still there.

Nia walked toward her.

The older woman looked uncertain.

“I didn't know whether I should leave.”

Nia stopped.

Then hugged her.

Margaret froze.

Then hugged back.

“Thank you.”

“I just recorded.”

“No.”

“You stayed.”

Margaret’s voice shook.

“I almost didn't.”

Nia stepped back.

“What made you?”

Margaret looked toward the police building.

“My husband used to say memory gets challenged.”

“Pictures don't get tired.”

“He was a photographer.”

Nia smiled faintly.

Margaret continued.

“I didn't understand what I was seeing.”

“But I knew I didn't want someone else deciding what happened.”

Nia took her hand.

“You may have saved me.”

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

“Let's wait until somebody with better shoes than mine figures all this out.”

Nia laughed.

It was the first real laugh since morning.

By Monday, the case had changed entirely.

Internal Affairs opened an investigation.

The county prosecutor was notified.

Officer Boone was placed on administrative leave.

Officer Harlan remained employed temporarily but removed from patrol pending review.

Their union representatives arrived.

Attorneys arrived.

Statements became careful.

The department issued a short public announcement:

The Brookhaven Police Department is reviewing a Saturday arrest following receipt of additional video evidence. The individual detained was released without charges. Two officers have been reassigned during the investigation.

Nia hated it.

“Additional video evidence.”

Rachel Kim sat across from her at the dining-room table.

Malcolm beside her.

Evan made coffee no one drank.

Rachel said:

“They're not going to confess in a press release.”

“They could say I didn't steal anything.”

“Not yet.”

“They know.”

“They know the arrest is compromised.”

“That isn't exactly the same.”

Nia looked furious.

Rachel continued.

“You want them careful right now.”

“Why?”

“Because careful people preserve documents.”

“Defensive people destroy them.”

Nia stared.

Rachel opened a folder.

“We have another problem.”

She pushed a printed timeline across the table.

11:39 a.m.

Official theft report supposedly initiated.

11:46.

Officers contact Nia.

11:52.

Bracelet “recovered.”

12:07.

Formal store loss report entered.

Nia looked up.
