Nia Bennett heard the handcuffs before she felt them.

A sharp metal click.

Then another.

Her left wrist tightened first.

The officer twisted her right arm behind her and pulled both hands together until her shoulders strained.

“Stop moving.”

“I’m not moving.”

“Quit resisting.”

“I said I’m not moving.”

Her cheek was inches above the white hood of the patrol car.

Heat radiated from the metal.

It was a bright Saturday afternoon outside Maywood Galleria, the kind of shopping center built to make everything look clean and expensive even from the parking lot.

Stone entrance towers.

Decorative trees.

Wide sidewalks.

Luxury boutiques on one side.

Restaurants on the other.

Families moved between parked SUVs carrying branded shopping bags.

A fountain near the main entrance threw sunlight across the pavement.

And directly in front of that entrance, Nia Bennett was being handcuffed.

People were watching.

She could feel them before she saw them.

Phones appeared.

A teenager near the curb was filming.

A woman beside a stroller had stopped walking.

Two men leaving a sporting-goods store stood near their truck without opening the doors.

An elderly white woman twenty yards away held a phone upright in both hands.

Nia barely noticed her.

The officer behind Nia tightened the cuffs.

“Stand still.”

“You pushed me onto a car.”

“Because you wouldn't cooperate.”

“I gave you my identification.”

“That's not what I'm talking about.”

Nia turned her head as far as she could.

The officer behind her was tall, broad, probably early forties.

His nameplate read:

HARLAN

The second officer stood beside Nia’s open handbag.

Officer Boone.

He wore black gloves.

Nia’s brown quilted handbag sat on the hood several feet away from her face.

The contents had been spread around it.

Phone charger.

Wallet.

Lipstick.

Sunglasses case.

Receipt.

Small makeup pouch.

Keys.

A folded shopping bag from one of the stores.

Boone pushed his gloved hand deeper into the handbag.

Nia stared.

“I did not consent to that search.”

Harlan pulled her shoulders backward.

“You're being detained during a theft investigation.”

“What theft?”

Boone ignored her.

He moved his hand around inside the bag.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

Nia saw it.

Not surprise.

Something else.

Something too controlled.

Boone slowly pulled his hand out.

Between two fingers was a small transparent evidence pouch.

Inside it sat a gold bracelet covered in small diamonds.

A white inventory sticker had been folded over the top.

Boone held it up.

“Well.”

Nia stared.

For a second she genuinely could not understand what she was looking at.

Then:

“What is that?”

Boone looked at Harlan.

“Found it.”

Nia’s stomach dropped.

“No.”

Boone turned toward her.

“No what?”

“That was not in my bag.”

Harlan laughed once.

Not loudly.

“You're going with that?”

Nia tried to turn.

Harlan forced her shoulder toward the hood again.

“That was not in my bag.”

Boone looked toward the small crowd.

He seemed almost pleased.

“Ma’am, we've got property consistent with the item reported stolen.”

“No.”

“You need to stop talking.”
