They were not discussing uncertainty.

They were not comparing information.

They looked finished.

As though the outcome had been decided before they opened the bag.

Nia pressed her forehead lightly against the glass.

Her phone remained outside.

Her wallet.

Her receipt.

Her purse.

Everything.

The elderly woman continued recording.

Their eyes met for half a second.

Nia did not know her.

The woman looked frightened.

But she did not stop.

That was the last thing Nia saw before the patrol car pulled away.

Two hours earlier, Nia had been laughing.

Evan Bennett stood in their kitchen making coffee while she changed earrings near the hallway mirror.

“You're wearing heels to buy perfume?”

Nia looked toward him.

“They're shoes.”

“They're weapons with straps.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

Nia slid on her dark-green blazer.

Underneath, she wore a black top and loose camouflage cargo pants gathered near her ankles.

The outfit should not have worked.

It did.

Evan looked at her.

“You realize everybody else at that mall is wearing yoga pants.”

“That sounds like everybody else's problem.”

He handed her coffee.

“Your dad still wants the same cologne?”

“Perfume.”

“He wants perfume?”

“For Mom.”

“Ah.”

“It’s their anniversary next week.”

“You told me birthday.”

“I changed the story because you ask too many questions.”

Evan smiled.

Nia kissed his cheek.

They had been married seven years.

Evan was a structural engineer who spent most weekdays inspecting commercial projects across the county.

Saturday morning was the first time in weeks neither of them had somewhere urgent to be.

He wanted breakfast.

Nia wanted to finish errands first.

“I’ll be gone an hour.”

“That means three.”

“One.”

“Two and a half.”

“An hour and fifteen.”

Evan checked his watch.

“I'm starting a timer.”

She picked up her handbag.

“You need hobbies.”

“You're my hobby.”

“That is disturbing.”

She left laughing.

At 11:04 a.m., she parked near the east entrance of Maywood Galleria.

At 11:11, she entered Aureline Fragrance.

At 11:23, she purchased a boxed perfume set for $186.42.

At 11:29, she stopped at a coffee kiosk.

At 11:37, she entered Maison Arquette, a high-end jewelry and accessories boutique.

Not because she planned to buy anything.

Because a green leather bag in the window caught her eye.

A sales associate greeted her.

No problem.

Nia looked at the bag.

Checked the price.

Nearly five thousand dollars.

She laughed quietly.

The associate smiled.

“Beautiful, though.”

“It better make breakfast too.”

The associate laughed.

They talked for two minutes.

Nia left without touching the jewelry counters.

At 11:44, she walked through the main doors.

At 11:46, two officers approached her.

Everything after that would become disputed.

Almost everything.

The official report said officers received a theft complaint from Maison Arquette at 11:39 a.m.

The report stated that an unidentified Black woman wearing green outerwear had been observed near a jewelry display and left the store shortly before staff discovered a missing bracelet.

Officer Daniel Harlan wrote:

Subject matched description and attempted to leave shopping center after officers identified themselves.

Nia would later read that sentence seven times.

Attempted to leave.

She had been walking toward her parked car before they approached.

Harlan also wrote:

Subject became argumentative when asked to produce identification.
