The first sound the Black Homeowner heard that morning was not his alarm.

It was steel dragging across concrete.

He opened his eyes.

For a second, he remained still beneath the blankets, trying to understand what had pulled him out of sleep.

Then came another sound.

A heavy metallic clank.

A truck engine idling.

A hydraulic whine.

The Black Homeowner sat upright.

His bedroom window faced the front of the house.

Through the blinds he could see flashing amber lights moving across the ceiling.

He got out of bed.

No shoes.

No jacket.

No idea what was happening.

He crossed the hall, reached the front window, and pulled the curtain aside.

His black pickup was halfway out of the driveway.

A white tow truck sat in the street with its wheel-lift positioned beneath the rear tires.

A heavy chain ran tight.

And beside it stood the HOA President.

Bright orange zip-up jacket.

Black leggings.

Running shoes.

A stack of papers clutched in one hand.

She was pointing toward his truck like she owned it.

The Black Homeowner stared for one full second.

Then he said one word.

“No.”

He moved.

Down the stairs.

Across the living room.

Out the front door.

He did not bother changing.

He wore a dark fitted T-shirt, plaid pajama pants, and house slippers.

The cold morning concrete hit his feet through the thin soles.

The HOA President saw him immediately.

Her mouth tightened.

The Tow Driver had one gloved hand on the hydraulic controls.

Another worker stood near the rear of the tow truck checking the chain.

The Black Homeowner walked straight toward them.

“What the hell are you doing?”

The Tow Driver looked over.

The HOA President answered first.

“Your vehicle is being removed.”

The Black Homeowner stopped.

“My vehicle is in my driveway.”

“It was.”

He looked at the truck.

The rear wheels had already moved several feet.

He looked back at her.

“Put it down.”

The HOA President lifted the papers.

“You were warned.”

“Put my truck down.”

The Tow Driver glanced between them.

The HOA President stepped closer.

“You ignored three violation notices.”

The Black Homeowner looked at the papers.

“What violation?”

“You know exactly what.”

“No.”

His voice became quieter.

“That’s why I’m asking.”

The HOA President’s face reddened.

“Commercial-style vehicle parking.”

The Black Homeowner turned toward his truck.

It was a standard full-size pickup.

Four doors.

Short bed.

No company logo.

No ladder rack.

No equipment.

No commercial plates.

He looked back.

“That is not a commercial vehicle.”

“It exceeds the neighborhood visual standard.”

The Black Homeowner stared.

“The what?”

“The board adopted updated parking standards.”

“When?”

“Last month.”

The Black Homeowner folded his arms.

“I attended last month’s meeting.”

Her eyes flickered.

Only for a moment.

“You left early.”

“I left after adjournment.”

“The board continued informally.”

The Black Homeowner almost laughed.

“That is not how a board vote works.”
