The Black Homeowner had been awake for less than forty minutes when a bucket of black sludge came over the deck railing.

One second he was kneeling beside a row of tomatoes in plaid pajama pants and an old gray sleep shirt.

The next, something cold, oily, and foul-smelling struck the back of his neck.

It poured over his shoulders.

Across his chest.

Down both arms.

The impact knocked the hand trowel from his fingers.

For half a second he could not understand what had happened.

Then the smell reached him.

Chemical.

Rotten.

Metallic.

Wrong.

He stood so quickly that the gardening stool tipped backward.

Above him, on the wooden deck, the HOA President held an empty white bucket with both hands.

She wore a sharply tailored hot-pink blouse and matching pants, immaculate white shoes, and an expression that suggested she had just completed something righteous.

The Black Homeowner stared at her.

Sludge ran from his hair onto his face.

He wiped his eyes with the cleanest part of his forearm.

“What did you just put on me?”

The HOA President leaned over the railing.

“Maybe now you’ll clean this disgusting yard.”

The Homeowner looked down.

His garden was not disgusting.

Six raised beds.

Tomatoes.

Peppers.

Herbs.

Two blueberry bushes.

A narrow row of flowers his daughter had planted the previous spring.

He had received three violation notices about it.

None had survived appeal.

The HOA President pointed toward the far corner.

“That whole section smells.”

The Homeowner looked back up.

“You dumped something on me.”

“You’ve ignored every warning.”

“What is in that bucket?”

She held it away from herself.

“Something your precious garden apparently loves.”

The Homeowner’s expression changed.

Not because of the insult.

Because his skin had started burning.

Barely.

A faint prickling along his forearms.

Then his neck.

He looked at the black residue coating his shirt.

Oil-like rainbow traces reflected in the sunlight.

His stomach tightened.

“Put the bucket down.”

The HOA President scoffed.

“Don’t order me around.”

“Put it down.”

Something in his voice finally unsettled her.

She glanced toward the bucket.

Then toward him.

“What?”

The Homeowner stepped backward from the garden.

“Do not touch anything else.”

She laughed once.

“Oh, please.”

The Homeowner turned toward the patio door.

He had taken only two steps when sirens became audible from beyond the houses.

The HOA President froze.

The Homeowner did too.

One siren.

Then another.

Then several.

The sound grew louder rapidly.

The HOA President looked toward the side fence.

“What did you do?”

The Homeowner stared.

“I haven’t even reached my phone.”

A dark SUV stopped outside the house.

Then an ambulance.

Then another unmarked vehicle.

The rear gate opened.

A man in a navy jacket stepped through first.

Large yellow letters across his chest:

FBI.

Two paramedics followed carrying medical bags.

Behind them came another federal investigator wearing protective gloves.

The HOA President’s face changed.
