“Exposure level matters.”

“That’s another non-answer.”

“It’s the responsible answer.”

The Homeowner exhaled.

The Agent continued.

“We don’t believe your brief skin exposure created an immediate life-threatening risk.”

“Good.”

“But the material should never have been dumped on residential property.”

The Homeowner laughed bitterly.

“I figured.”

The Agent paused.

“Where exactly did the HOA President say she got the bucket?”

“She didn’t.”

“She told us it came from a maintenance shed.”

The Homeowner frowned.

“What maintenance shed?”

“That’s what we’re determining.”

The subdivision had one HOA storage building beside the clubhouse.

Landscaping tools.

Pool chemicals for the community pool.

Folding chairs.

Holiday decorations.

Nothing that should contain industrial sludge.

The Homeowner asked:

“Was that the place you were coming to search?”

Silence.

Then:

“I can’t discuss operational details yet.”

That was answer enough.

The Homeowner looked through his sister’s window.

His Daughter slept on the couch.

A blanket pulled to her chin.

“Agent.”

“Yes?”

“My backyard started smelling strange months ago.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“We found your emails.”

The Homeowner went still.

“My emails to the HOA?”

“Yes.”

“How did you get them already?”

Another pause.

“We had access to records connected to the association before today.”

That changed everything.

The Homeowner had assumed the HOA President accidentally stumbled into a federal investigation.

Maybe she had not.

“Was she already under investigation?”

“I can’t answer that.”

“Is my property part of it?”

“We’re testing.”

The Homeowner’s grip tightened around the phone.

“My daughter has been gardening there.”

“I understand.”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“I need you to actually understand.”

“She sits in that dirt.”

“She digs with her hands.”

“She eats tomatoes straight off the vine.”

“She runs barefoot across that yard.”

The Agent let him speak.

The Homeowner continued.

“If somebody has been dumping chemicals behind that fence for months, I need to know tonight.”

“We don’t yet know that.”

“Then when?”

“As soon as the lab results support an answer.”

The Homeowner closed his eyes.

Facts first.

He hated it.

But he understood.

The next morning, three federal vehicles remained outside his house.

So did a state environmental response truck.

Workers in protective gear collected soil.

Samples from the garden.

Grass.

Drainage ditch.

Mulch.

Fence line.

They drilled several shallow soil cores.

Neighbors watched from driveways.

The HOA clubhouse parking lot had been sealed too.

The President’s car was gone.
