Arthur stepped off the porch and walked to the fence. He did not hurry. He brushed aside the mulch, the same mulch he had replaced the night he found the fitting, and uncovered the connector. The small pipe from his line was still attached. Water beaded at the joint, faintly violet in the morning light. Several neighbors made a quiet sound. Not drama. The sound people make when a suspicion becomes an object.

He turned back. “So this is why my water bill tripled.”

Her face went bright red, a red that did not match the roses. It was the color of a sentence that cannot be walked back. “I was just borrowing a little water.”

He nodded. “A little water that runs all day.”

The tint had spread across most of the beds. The smell moved gently and refused to leave. Brenda looked at the roses as if clear water from the can might still correct them.

“My garden is ruined.”

“No,” Arthur said. “Your garden is just colorful.”

Someone tried not to laugh, failed briefly, and turned it into a cough. The morning was not finished. Someone had already reported the water to the board. The smell had done part of that work. The connector, now visible, and the small crowd on the sidewalk had done the rest.

He did not pose. He stood on his own side of the fence and waited the way he had waited for the meter. Within an hour two board members pulled up. The treasurer, a man who preferred numbers to scenes. A woman who had seconded most of Brenda’s enforcement motions for a year and was now stepping into a smell she had not voted for.

Brenda rushed them. “Arthur sabotaged my garden.”
