His father abandoned him emotionally long before death.

His mother retreated into illness.

His sister died young.

Friends became employees.

Employees became dependents.

Everyone Nicholas loved eventually left, died, or disappointed him.

Claire had always believed that fear gave her leverage.

Tonight it failed.

She walked out.

No one stopped her.

Nicholas watched the doors close.

Then he looked toward Hannah.

“Hospital.”

She nodded.

The medical evaluation lasted through dawn.

Blood tests confirmed exposure to the unprescribed medication.

Not enough to create catastrophic toxicity.

Enough to support Hannah’s concerns.

The doctors adjusted everything.

Fluids.

Monitoring.

Medication review.

Nicholas slept.

For the first time in weeks, deeply.

When he woke, Hannah sat beside the window reading a paperback.

He looked at her.

“You stayed.”

She lowered the book.

“I’m working.”

“What time?”

“Seven forty.”

“Morning?”

“Yes.”

He looked around.

“Walter?”

“Making calls.”

Nicholas closed his eyes.

“Claire?”

“No idea.”

He opened them.

“You don't ask questions?”

“I ask medical ones.”

“Convenient.”

“Yes.”

Nicholas looked toward her shoes.

The same cheap sneakers.

One sole beginning to separate again.

He asked:

“Why do you need this job?”

Hannah frowned.

“What?”

“You said you needed it.”

“That was three months ago.”

“I remember.”

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“My brother.”

“What about him?”

“He needs heart surgery.”

Nicholas stared.

“How old?”

“Eight.”

“And this job pays for it.”

“The insurance helps.”

“When?”

“Surgery?”

“Yes.”

“Two months.”

Nicholas looked toward the ceiling.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Why would I?”

He turned toward her.

“Because I could help.”

Hannah’s expression changed instantly.

“No.”

Nicholas frowned.

“No?”

“I don't want money from you.”

“You take a salary.”

“That’s work.”

“So?”

“So I earned it.”

Nicholas almost laughed.

“You think I give money away casually?”

“I think you’re used to solving people with money.”

His smile disappeared.

Hannah continued.

“My brother is not a problem for you to solve.”

Nicholas studied her.

“You're proud.”

“Yes.”

“Stubborn.”

“Yes.”

“Impossible.”

“You said that already.”

He smiled.

Then the smile faded.

“What if insurance denies something?”

“I’ll handle it.”

“How?”

“I always do.”

Nicholas looked at her for a long time.

Then nodded.

He would remember that answer.

Meanwhile Walter began investigating the medication tampering privately.

Not through Nicholas’s criminal contacts.

Nicholas specifically prohibited that.

The situation was medical and potentially criminal.

Lawyers.

Physicians.

Security logs.

Police if evidence justified.

No intimidation.

No men visiting Claire’s family.

No threats.

Nicholas surprised Walter with that instruction.

Walter asked:

“You sure?”

Nicholas looked at him from the hospital bed.

“If Claire did this, I want proof.”
