The slap echoed through the marble foyer.

For one second, nobody moved.

Nicholas Valenti sat motionless in his black-and-gold wheelchair, his head turned slightly from the impact, one hand gripping the leather armrest.

The engagement party had ended less than twenty minutes earlier.

Crystal glasses still stood on silver trays.

White roses filled enormous arrangements along the staircase.

A string quartet had packed its instruments and disappeared through the service entrance.

Outside, caterers were loading the final crates into vans beneath the mansion’s circular driveway.

Inside, Nicholas’s fiancée stood over him with one hand still raised.

Claire Whitmore had spent the entire evening smiling for photographers.

She had worn a shimmering silver gown, diamonds at her throat, and the expression of a devoted woman who had sacrificed everything to remain beside the man she loved.

Now the cameras were gone.

So was the devotion.

Nicholas slowly turned his face toward her.

“Do that again.”

His voice was quiet.

Claire stared.

The challenge surprised her.

Eight months earlier, Nicholas could have emptied a nightclub simply by walking through the door with the wrong expression.

Now his legs did not move.

His balance remained weak.

And even getting from the wheelchair into bed required careful positioning on his worst days.

Claire had apparently begun confusing physical vulnerability with powerlessness.

Her face twisted.

“You think you're still frightening?”

Nicholas looked at her.

“No.”

He paused.

“I think you forgot who you are when nobody is watching.”

Claire’s hand lifted again.

It never reached him.

Someone caught her wrist.

Claire spun around.

Hannah Reed stood beside her.

Pale-blue scrubs.

Dark hair pulled into a tired bun.

Cheap sneakers.

No jewelry except a tiny silver cross at her throat.

The private nurse looked nothing like the people who normally moved through Nicholas Valenti’s world.

No designer clothing.

No bodyguards.

No important surname.

But her grip did not shake.

Claire stared at her.

“Take your hand off me.”

Hannah did not.

“No.”

Claire’s eyes widened.

“You work for him.”

“Exactly.”

Hannah stepped between Claire and the wheelchair.

“You will not touch him again.”

Nicholas watched her.

Something in his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Because Hannah was not merely angry.

She looked like someone whose suspicion had finally found proof.

Claire noticed it too.

Her eyes moved toward Hannah’s scrub pocket.

“What have you done?”

Hannah slowly released Claire’s wrist.

Then she reached into her pocket.

A small transparent evidence bag appeared between her fingers.

Two pale tablets sat inside.

Claire went completely still.

Nicholas’s gaze moved toward the bag.

“What is that?”

Hannah looked at him.

“The reason I think you've been getting worse.”

Claire laughed too quickly.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Hannah ignored her.

Nicholas’s fingers tightened on the wheelchair arm.

“Explain.”

Hannah held up her phone.

A photograph filled the screen.

Prescription bottle.

Label.

Dosage instructions.

Then another photograph.

Different tablets.

Different markings.

Hannah said:

“These were inside medication labeled as something else.”

Claire’s face lost color.

Nicholas saw it.

So did Hannah.

Nobody needed another word.

The foyer seemed suddenly enormous.

Too quiet.

Nicholas looked at Claire.

“Were you changing my medication?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Too fast.

He knew her tells.

For four years, Claire had been beside him at dinners, fundraisers, private meetings, vacations, and charity galas.

She had lied socially hundreds of times.

Everyone did in their world.

Fake compliments.

Fake enthusiasm.

Fake affection for people they privately despised.

Nicholas had always admired how effortlessly she did it.

Now the skill was failing.

He looked toward Hannah.

“When did you find those?”

“This afternoon.”

“And you said nothing?”

“I needed to be sure.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You stole medicine from his private room.”

Hannah turned.

“I isolated two tablets because they didn't match the prescription record.”

“You had no right.”

“I’m his nurse.”

“You're an employee.”

Hannah’s face hardened.

“Which means his medical safety is literally my responsibility.”

Claire looked toward Nicholas.

“She’s manipulating you.”
