He looked at Ellie.

Then toward the parking lot.

“There's more.”

Sarah’s chest tightened.

“You said that already.”

“This is different.”

“How?”

Ray slowly reached for his wallet again.

The placemat had been one secret.

Apparently not the only one.

“He made me promise something else.”

Sarah stared.

“What?”

Ray’s eyes held hers.

“The last thing your husband asked me to do wasn't to save him.”

A cold sensation traveled down Sarah’s back.

“It was something he was terrified you would never find out.”

Sarah did not speak.

Ray reached inside his vest.

This time he removed a small brass key.

Old.

Discolored.

Attached to a faded blue plastic tag.

A number had been written on it.

214

Sarah stared.

“What is that?”

“I don't know.”

“You've had it three years?”

“Yes.”

“He gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Minutes before he died.”

Ray placed the key on the table.

“Danny pulled it from inside his boot.”

“He told me not to give it to police.”

Sarah recoiled.

“What?”

“He was very clear.”

“Why?”

“He said, ‘They’ll call it an accident.’”

Sarah stopped breathing.

Ray continued.

“He told me to find you.”

“Give you this key.”

“And tell you one sentence.”

Sarah’s hands turned cold.

“What sentence?”

Ray looked directly into her eyes.

“Your husband said, ‘Sarah needs to know the guardrail was already cut.’”

Silence.

Even Ellie seemed to understand something had changed.

Sarah stared at the key.

“No.”

Ray did not move.

She shook her head.

“No.”

“The police investigated.”

“I know.”

“They said Danny lost control.”

“I know.”

“It had rained.”

“I know.”

“There were skid marks.”

“I know what they said.”

“Then what are you telling me?”

“Only what Danny told me.”

Sarah stood abruptly.

The bench scraped concrete.

Ellie flinched.

Sarah immediately knelt beside her.

“Sorry, baby.”

Ellie stared at the key.

Then whispered:

“Truck hit us.”

Sarah froze.

Ray froze too.

“What?”

Ellie’s eyes widened as though she had frightened herself.

Sarah touched her shoulders.

“Sweetheart.”

Ellie stared somewhere far away.

“Black truck.”

Sarah’s pulse surged.

“What black truck?”

The child’s breathing quickened.

Ray spoke gently.

“Ellie, don't push.”

She looked at him.

He nodded.

“You're safe.”

Ellie swallowed.

Then said:

“Dad yelled.”

Sarah had heard more of her daughter's voice in ten minutes than in three years.

Every word carried another nightmare.

“Do you remember what he yelled?”

Ellie shook her head.

Then closed her eyes.

“Move.”

Ray and Sarah looked at each other.
