“Your husband kept wiping syrup off her sleeve.”

A broken laugh escaped Sarah.

“Danny used to say she could get syrup on herself from across the room.”

Ray smiled.

Only for a second.

“She came over because of this.”

He touched an old eagle patch sewn onto his leather vest.

“She wanted me to draw one.”

Sarah looked at the placemat.

The bird did indeed look terrible.

“You drew that?”

Ray sighed.

“I warned her I couldn’t draw.”

Ellie’s fingers tightened around the paper.

“She wouldn't speak to me at first.”

Ray looked at her.

“She wrote the question.”

Sarah stared.

“What question?”

“What’s your name?”

Ray tapped the word on the paper.

“I told her Ray.”

“She wrote it.”

Ellie watched him.

Sarah remembered something Danny used to say.

Ellie had always been shy.

Even before the crash.

Danny would kneel beside her whenever relatives complained that she was too quiet.

“She’s saving her words for when they matter.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Ray continued.

“I left before they did.”

“Got on the bike.”

“Headed east.”

“Twenty minutes later I realized I’d left my reading glasses on the diner counter.”

“So I turned around.”

His voice changed.

Sarah knew what came next.

Still, she needed him to say it.

“When I reached the quarry curve, I saw smoke below the road.”

Ellie moved closer.

Ray stared at the tabletop.

“Not much.”

“Thin gray smoke through the trees.”

“I almost passed it.”

“But something looked wrong with the guardrail.”

“So I stopped.”

Sarah’s breathing became shallow.

“I slid down the slope.”

“Your husband’s truck was on its side.”

Ray’s voice trembled.

“Your daughter was hanging upside down in the back.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“I thought she was dead.”

Ellie’s hand squeezed hers.

“Then she opened her eyes.”

Ray looked directly at the girl.

“She didn't cry.”

“She didn't scream.”

“She just looked at me.”

Sarah’s lips trembled.

“Danny?”

Ray stared at her.

“He was alive.”

The world stopped.

Sarah had never known that.

The police report said Danny had sustained fatal internal injuries and died before extraction.

Nobody had ever told her whether he had been conscious.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

Sarah’s voice broke.

“What did he say?”

Ray looked down.

“The first thing?”

“Yes.”

“He said, ‘Get my little girl out.’”

Sarah covered her mouth.

Ray continued.

“He kept repeating it.”

“Get Ellie.”

“Please get Ellie.”

“He didn’t ask me to help him.”

“He didn’t ask how bad he was.”

“He only cared about her.”

Sarah began crying silently.

Ray’s own eyes reddened.

“I broke the rear window.”

“Cut the seat belt.”

“Got Ellie loose.”

“I carried her up the slope.”

“She kept looking back.”

“I told her I was going back for her daddy.”

“And I did.”

Sarah forced herself to ask:

“Did he know?”

Ray went still.

“Know what?”

“That he was dying.”

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.”
