“No.”

“I mean…”

She rubbed her hands together.

“I loved Danny.”

“I know.”

“I still do.”

“I know.”

“I don't know what it means that I…”

She stopped.

Ray did not help her.

That was his kindness.

He let her find the words.

“I miss you when you aren't here.”

Ray looked toward the yard.

“I miss you too.”

Sarah’s heart beat harder.

“That makes me feel guilty.”

He nodded.

“I figured.”

“Doesn't it make you feel strange?”

“Why?”

“Danny.”

Ray thought.

Then:

“Sarah, I knew Danny for maybe forty minutes.”

“Some of the most important forty minutes of my life.”

“But I wasn't his friend.”

“I don't have a claim on his memory.”

“You do.”

Ray shook his head.

“I have responsibility.”

“That's different.”

Sarah looked at him.

Ray continued.

“He loved you.”

“I know that because he spent his final minutes talking about you and Ellie.”

“He didn't use those minutes to ask the world to stop after him.”

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“He wanted you safe.”

“That’s not the same as wanting me to replace him.”

“No.”

Ray’s voice softened.

“And I would never ask you to.”

Sarah looked away.

“Then what are we doing?”

“I don't know.”

“For once, I’m okay not knowing.”

That answer saved them.

They did not kiss that day.

Or the next month.

They simply stopped pretending affection was betrayal.

Then came Danny’s birthday.

Sarah always took Ellie to the cemetery.

That year Ray offered to drive.

Sarah hesitated.

Then accepted.

At the grave, Ray remained near the car.

Sarah noticed.

Afterward she walked toward him.

“You can come closer.”

“This is family.”

“So are you.”

The words slipped out.

Ray looked at her.

Sarah looked startled by herself.

Ellie took Ray’s hand.

That solved it.

They walked together.

Ray stood before Danny’s grave.

For a long time he said nothing.

Then:

“I'm sorry I couldn't get you out.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Ray continued.

“But your girl is doing okay.”

Ellie squeezed his hand.

“So is Sarah.”

Sarah looked at him.

“And…”

Ray smiled faintly.

“They scare me equally.”

Ellie laughed.

Sarah hit his arm.

That night, after Ellie slept, Ray stood near the front door.

Sarah said:

“Stay for coffee.”

He looked at her.

“You hate coffee after eight.”

“I’m making an exception.”

They sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where Danny’s files had first been opened.

The same room where Ellie had said Mom again.

Sarah looked at Ray.

“What are you afraid of?”

He considered.

“Ruining this.”

“Same.”

“What else?”

“Being compared to him.”

Sarah immediately shook her head.

“I wouldn't.”
